Julia and Sonja - Wish Granting Volunteers

Two Volunteers, One Friendship, 18 Wishes

When Julia and Sonja signed up for the Make-A-Wish volunteer training, they knew that they were about to embark on an experience that was life-altering for the kids and families they were assigned to, but they had no idea how dramatically their own lives would change.

The two – who did not know each other – began their volunteering within three months of one another, and both jumped at the chance to grant the same wish. Since then, they both have worked on over 30 wishes individually, 18 together.

The wish that started their friendship -- for a young girl who wanted a mermaid-themed room redecoration, complete with a bubble wall -- would require a volunteer pair who could work quickly, efficiently, and creatively together. Spending hours together visiting craft stores, building a bubble wall and creating decorations brought out the best in Julia and Sonja, who bonded over their passion and commitment to Make-A-Wish.

“When Julia and I met on that very first wish we had no idea what a wonderful friendship would soon be on the horizon,” said Sonja. “Since that day, we have shared some incredible memories, have stood by each other through some very hard moments in life, and  experienced much laughter!”

This dynamic duo has completed seven wishes since they first met and are actively working on 11 wishes together for a grand total of 18 wishes!

“When I first signed up to volunteer, I had no idea how much I could gain from the experience.” said Julia.

The love for the families and the lasting friendships are only the start of what you get when you become a volunteer.
