Social Worker gives patients hope with Make-A-Wish

Dorianne McGrath referred a patient to Make-A-Wish for the first time 16 years ago. The experience left such a mark on Dorianne that she continues to make a point to introduce as many children to Make-A-Wish as possible.

Dorianne is a social worker for hematology and oncology patients at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital. It’s her job to help families cope with every part of their cancer journey. She’s often with patients every step of the way, from diagnosis to remission and beyond.

“As social workers, we see patients and their families who are struggling with a new diagnosis, financial hardship, mental health, lack of resources and so much more,” she said.

That’s where a wish comes in. “Some days can be challenging. Working with Make-A-Wish is a positive part of my day.”

Most of Dorianne’s patients are in treatment anywhere from 6 months to 3 years. They often come to the hospital or clinic multiple times a week. A wish gives the child something fun to talk about with clinic staff during these visits instead of focusing on the treatment they are receiving. “When I am meeting an oncology patient who is overwhelmed and fearful about diagnosis, incorporating Make-A-Wish is a light during a dark time,” Dorianne said.

“Make-A-Wish provides a fun distraction, provides hope, and gives the patient a reward at the end of a sometimes very long treatment plan.”

Dorianne has heard wish stories of all types and they all impact her in different ways. One particularly meaningful wish was for a teenager who wished to have braces; who likely wouldn’t have had access to them without a wish.

“I love to hear the different ideas kids have that fit their unique personalities,” Dorianne said. “I love seeing pictures from their wish experience and hearing about how it was special to them.”
