2023 Walk & Roll For Wishes

On April 29th, the Make-A-Wish New Jersey World Wish Day Walk & Roll For Wishes was hosted at American Dream in East Rutherford, presented by the Battista Family and Gusto Grill. Over 600 supporters gathered for an inspirational celebration as we celebrated our chapter’s 40th anniversary and 12,000 wishes granted for children with critical illnesses throughout the Garden State.

For over four decades, Make-A-Wish has granted over 550,000 wishes across the United States and around the world. April 29th marks the global anniversary of the day that inspired the founding of Make-A-Wish globally and is known as World Wish Day.

Three wishes were celebrated during the event – James’ wish for an accessible movie room, granted in partnership with our dear friends at George to the Rescue, Morgan’s wish to give to the Comfort Zone Camp, and Jace’s wish to have a Spider-Man themed camper, which was granted as a complete surprise through a live feed that very morning on World Wish Day!

The event was a celebration of the entire New Jersey community that has continued to provide the essential support and vital funding needed to continue to deliver hope, strength and joy to children with critical illnesses.

James' wish to have a room makeover

James, 7
muscular dystrophy

James and his older sister Rose have both been diagnosed with congenital muscular dystrophy. After James declared his wish for an accessible home theater/gaming room that would allow him to play games with his friends and enjoy movie nights with his family, George to the Rescue host George Oliphant partnered with us, and brought in a dedicated team of experts and designers to create an immersive cinematic experience that will provide comfort, joy, and entertainment to James and his family for many years to come.

Morgan's wish to give

I wish to give to Comfort Zone Camp
Morgan, 17
Hodgkin's lymphoma

It was during Morgan’s second round of chemotherapy during her courageous battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma that Morgan was introduced to Make-A-Wish. When thinking of her wish, Morgan knew that she wanted to take the opportunity to give back. The first thing that came to mind was a nonprofit bereavement program her family had been involved with since its inception – Comfort Zone Camp, which hosts free-of-charge weekend-long camps nationwide, for children who have lost a parent, sibling or caregiver, to help navigate their grief journey and learn how to build trust.

Jace's wish to have a camper

I wish to have a Spider-Man camper
Jace, 4
heart condition

Jace’s health journey began before he was even born, when he was diagnosed with a heart defect that affects the valves and chambers of the heart and would need open heart surgery as soon as he was born. Jace loves being outdoors but tires easily and is temperature-sensitive due to his heart condition. For his wish, Jace wanted a way to enjoy the things he loves to do while not putting his health at risk. Jace wished for a camper, but not just any ordinary camper – a Spider-Man themed camper! Jace was surprised with his wish come true on World Wish Day, and even more surprised when none other than Spider-Man himself jumped out of the camper to celebrate with Jace. They spent the morning in Jace’s camper, learning how to catch bad guys from his web-slinging hero.

The Granting Of Our Historic 12,000th Wish

Judah's wish for a tractor

On a sunny summer day in early July, a teenager named Judah experienced the surprise of a lifetime, during a celebration in his honor with over one hundred members of the community, including wish alumni and families, local company partners, and Make-A-Wish staff and volunteers. His one true wish? To have a brand new, Kubota BX Series 4WD Sub-Compact Tractor. Judah’s wish was granted during a patriotic celebration around Independence Day, at the Samuel & Josephine Plumeri Wishing Place, the wish-granting castle and home of Make-A-Wish New Jersey.

Judah courageously battles thalassemia, a life-threatening genetic blood disorder. He lives on a farm where his future goals include cultivating the land, feeding the animals, growing his own vegetables, and preparing his own meals from start to finish. Judah’s tractor, a specific model he chose, is a brand-new Tractor-Loader-Backhoe. The major highlight of the model is its versatility, which will be ideal for the many different projects Judah intends to use it for – a true game-changer. He also is now able to keep up with his brothers, something he has struggled with his entire life.

Judah’s wish marked a significant and historic milestone for Make-A-Wish New Jersey. Along with Make-A-Wish New Jersey celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, this wish was the 12,000th wish granted since the chapter’s founding in 1983. The celebration at the Wishing Place engaged an entire community in a celebration filled with games, food trucks, ice cream, and of course, the impactful mission of Make-A-Wish.

Judah’s parents Jennie and Ron shared how happy they are to see him filled with hope for the first time in his life, and that Make-A-Wish is the reason for that new-found hope. Due to Judah’s life-threatening medical condition, his mother Jennie shared that Judah does not often talk about the future or think about what is to come.

“It was the first time he’s said I’ll still be here in six months, or I’ll be here next year,” Jennie shared.

“You always want your children to have hope,” Judah’s dad Ron reflected. “We can want the best for our children, but unless they want that too – he is the one that has to put the effort into the hope, he’s the one that has to stay with it every day."

To finally see him starting to step out of “the end” and into “what can be” thanks to Make-A-Wish is definitely a blessing.
