Internship Overview

If you're looking for an internship, Make-A-Wish® can provide a valuable and rewarding experience. 

When you join the Make-A-Wish internship program, you will learn valuable skills necessary for your future career and learn how a nonprofit organization operates, as well as experience the reward of helping to make wishes come true for some very spectacular children in the local community. 

Our offices are open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and an intern’s hours and days can be flexible within that time frame. Make-A-Wish offers competitive pay for all intern positions.

*PLEASE NOTE: All internships require that you submit a writing sample.

  • Spring semester: resumes due by November 29th 
  • Summer semester: resumes due by March 15th 
  • Fall semester: resumes are due by September 16th

Pittsburgh Office Internships

Our Pittsburgh headquarter office is located in the Gulf Tower and the mailing address is 707 Grant Street, 37th floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.

Marketing and Communications 
(This position has been filled for Spring)

For this internship, it is required that applicants submit a writing sample with their resume and cover letter. Good phone skills and excellent writing skills are required. Experience with social media, news writing, photography and videography a plus.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Completing stories on fulfilled wishes for general use and distribution
  • Writing and distributing press releases
  • Creating and assisting with creation of content for chapter’s social media platforms
  • Writing articles for our volunteer newsletter
  • Helping organize community relations and outreach programs
  • Assisting with promotional events or general office duties as needed

Fundraising 
(This position has been filled for Spring)

For this internship, it is required that applicants submit a writing sample with their resume and cover letter. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Assist the development team that is responsible for raising funds for children’s wishes 
  • Learn information about the children’s wishes while writing wish stories for thank you letters
  • Assist with the Kids for Wish Kids® and Wishmakers on Campus® fundraising programs 
  • Update fundraising reports using Microsoft Excel
  • Utilize fundraising software for donor care 
  • Assist in planning and implementing special events, such as golf tournaments, motorcycle runs, haunted houses and recognition events
  • May include attending event planning meetings 
  • May include assisting at events depending on intern’s availability. Events are usually during weekends or evenings 
  • Learn about corporate and individual giving 
  • Make follow-up telephone calls to donors and volunteers (no telemarketing involved) 
  • Assist in office duties as needed

Program Services - Wish Team 
(This position has been filled for Spring and Summer)

For this internship, it is required that applicants submit a writing sample with their resume and cover letter. 

Assist in fulfilling children’s wishes including travel, celebrity, occupational and gift wishes. Tasks may include: 

  • Making travel arrangements and creating itineraries 
  • Write thank you letters and follow up correspondence upon the completion of a wish 
  • Researching wish ideas and making telephone calls to donors and vendors 
  • Participating in the fulfillment of gift wishes (for example, shopping sprees) and/or wish parties 
  • Plan and participate in wish kid events 
  • Assist with and participate in volunteer activities such as training  
  • Additional projects as assigned or required by the student’s internship program
  • Assist with office duties as needed 
Erie Office Internship

Our Erie office is located at 717 Indiana Drive, Erie, PA 16505.

As an intern for the Make-A-Wish®  regional office in Erie, you are exposed to several facets of a nonprofit organization such as communications, event planning, customer service, nonprofit administration and human resources.

Overview of Internship Position

Responsibilities include:  

  • Assist with wish planning including travel research and bookings, creating travel itineraries and other supporting documents, medical approval forms, etc.
  • Complete calls and follow-up with medical professionals
  • Follow-up with families post-wish, including the composition of wish stories
  • Input and manage constituent information in internal database
  • Solicit discounts/donations from local vendors for special events
  • Assist in the planning of special events, wish kid events, and fundraising events
  • Assist Development Department with department needs when applicable

Required Skills: 

  • Ability to learn quickly, work independently, and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be comfortable making phone calls on behalf of the organization
  • Strong email communication skills
  • Assist with daily operation management (i.e. mail-outs, shipments, supply restocking, etc.)
  • Reliable mode of transportation
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Represent the Make-A-Wish brand with integrity

Scranton Office Internship

Overview of Internship Position

  • Identify and attend community events/health fairs/volunteer fairs relevant to Make-A-Wish  
  • Assist with promotional events  

Development (Fundraising and Special Events) 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Assist the regional manager and development team that is responsible for raising funds for children’s wishes 
  • Assist with the Kids for Wish Kids® and Wishmakers on Campus® fundraising programs  
  • Assist in planning and implementing special events such as golf tournaments, motorcycle runs, haunted houses and recognition events.  
  • May include attending event planning meetings  
  • May include assisting at events depending on intern’s availability.

Morgantown Office Internships
