Nekkia's wish is for the whole family

It’s easy to think a wish is just for one person. After all, a wish is technically granted to a specific child with a specific critical illness.

But for many Make-A-Wish recipients, a wish transforms the whole family—and even offers hope and joy to the community who grants it.

This was true for 15-year-old Nekkia who was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder before birth. Two of her siblings also suffer from the same blood disorder, and they have endured many more treatments and hospital stays than most people experience in their lifetimes.

“To watch them suffer is the worst thing to experience as a parent. It’s excruciating,” said wish mom, Erika. “Wishes are important because kids go through so much. They are a wonderful way to reward them when they are feeling good.”

Nekkia's wish was granted during the height of the pandemic. When she considered what would bring joy to her whole family during this hard time, she knew that a wish for electronics could offer just that.

Nekkia wished for electronics for herself, but also for her family. She wished to have her own computer and television. She also got airpods for her siblings and different colored Nintendo switches so that they could all play together at home.

“It was a shock to realize that wishes are for the whole family. The entire family takes the brunt of suffering, and it’s nice that we were all able to get some joy and acknowledgement.”

The local fire department delivering Nekkia's gifts.

Nekkia’s wish came true on her 15th birthday. The local fire department delivered a pile of wrapped gifts along with Nekkia’s favorite meal from IHOP and a birthday cake.

I wish you could have seen the joy on Nekkia’s face as she opened gifts and shared them with her siblings.

Would you like to bring joy to wish families like Nekkia?
