Matthew’s room redecoration enhances his quality of life

When Make-A-Wish entered wish kid Matthew’s life, his family knew they had an opportunity to select a wish that would help enhance Matthew’s quality of life and provide him privacy and his own space.

That’s how Matthew wished for a room redecoration.

But this wasn’t just any room re-do. , Matthew lives with a genetic condition called CHARGE syndrome, which affects many different parts of his body. Day-to-day, this means diaper changes, body regulation measures, a feeding tube to assist with eating and a tracheostomy which helps him breathe through his narrowed airway.

Due to the complexities of Matthew’s medical condition, he was living in a shared family room. His wish not only represents a comfortable and inviting space, but one he can safely call his own.

The cornerstone piece of Matthew’s room re-do is an air conditioning unit, which keeps him cool while he sleeps during warm summer days.

Matthew’s mom Megan remembers in the first meeting with his wish-granting volunteers. “They really got to know Matthew, to figure out what he really wanted,” she said.

After spending time with Matthew and discovering his love for firetrucks, his wish granting volunteers put together a firetruck-themed room filled with a new bed, carpet, bookshelves (for his hundreds of books) and storage for his toys and medical supplies.

On Matthew’s wish day, his room was transformed and a socially distanced celebration commenced with a cake and balloons. Most importantly, the day was all about celebrating Matthew.

Megan says wishes are important because,

“it’s so nice for kids who don’t go to mainstream schooling to be seen by everybody and have a group of people so focused on them … it gives them a sense of belonging.”

Matthew loves his new room, and especially enjoys hanging out in his new bean bag chair.
