How One Annual Snowmobile Event Brings This Club Together
When Jim and Jan Martinek’s snowmobile club inherited a fundraising event for Make-A-Wish in 2001, they didn’t expect they’d be starting out on what would become a 20-year tradition that has raised more than $100,000 for wishes in Alaska and Washington.
But knowing the generosity and support of the local community, they aren’t surprised. Whether their Junco Snowmobile Club numbered in the teens or several dozen, supporting Make-A-Wish is a point of pride and a labor of love.
Every year, our club gets excited about it. We don’t really have to ask people to plan or participate, everyone just steps up to make it happen.

20 years and more than $100,000 raised for wishes - thank you Junco Snowmobile Club!
Held annually in January, the Charity on the Snow event attracts snowmobilers from clubs throughout Western Washington. They gather for a ride, an auction and an evening of revelry—all to raise money to grant wishes. Some years, there are other aspects—like geocaching or a scavenger hunt. But it’s mostly a chance for this generous community to gather and support a cause they are passionate about.
“What a cool program that will help children and families to have a needed break from what’s going on medically,” said Jim, who saw first-hand how needed community support is for families facing illness. Growing up, his sister had polio and he remains grateful to the people who helped his family.
Junco Snowmobile Club’s generosity has created ripples throughout the community. As the event has grown, more of the community have become involved. Now, it’s not just the participating snowmobile clubs contributing; it’s local businesses donating auction items, attending the event and taking an interest in the children helped through the fundraiser.
And Jim and Jan see even more opportunity in their future. “We want to encourage other snowmobile clubs to consider hosting fundraisers for Make-A-Wish,” said Jan. “The benefit to our club is so meaningful, and we’re positively impacting the lives of local kids."
