Jersey City Teen / Hudson Catholic Student To Be Surprised By Make-A-Wish New Jersey
February 27, 2020
Monroe Township - 16-year-old Antonio from Jersey City, who is courageously battling a brain tumor, will arrive at Hudson Catholic for a special school assembly at 1:00PM on Thursday. Unknown to Antonio, the assembly will include a special segment just for him, when his wish to go to the legendary rivalry of Duke vs. UNC on March 7th will be officially granted by Make-A-Wish New Jersey.
Surprised by the entire student body, his teachers, friends, and family, Antonio will be addressed by video messages from sports celebrities with ties to the Blue Devils, announcing the granting of his wish. He will also be surprised by special visits to the assembly by famous Hudson Catholic alumni – Jim Spanarkel, analyst for the Brooklyn Nets on the YES Network and College Basketball on CBS, Duke alum and first-round draft pick in 1979, and Mike O’Koren, UNC alum and first-round draft pick in 1980 – as well as famed Jersey City native and Hall of Fame Coach Bob Hurley.
Antonio is bravely battling a life-threatening brain tumor, and declared to Make-A-Wish New Jersey earlier this season that his one true wish was to travel to North Carolina for the famous matchup on March 7th. The legendary rivalry has strong roots in Jersey City, when it grew to extraordinary levels in the 1970s as Jim Spanarkel and Mike O’Koren, once teammates at Hudson Catholic Regional High School, would then play against one another at Duke and UNC.
