Sarah Wannarka Volunteer Spotlight

Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Sarah

Since 2009, Sarah Wannarka has been a dedicated Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas volunteer, helping grant 100+ wishes for children with critical illnesses. Her journey began after years of volunteering with Children’s Advocacy Centers, where she developed a passion for giving a voice to children and families facing unimaginable challenges.

When she discovered the Wish Granter role at Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas, it felt like a natural fit.

For Sarah, every wish interview is more than a conversation; it’s a moment of healing. “I love seeing the smiles when we talk about parties and wishes instead of needles and surgeries. It’s an honor to be part of their battle and healing process,” she shares.

Among countless memorable wish experiences, Sarah shared a few that stood out. Raphael’s wish to have a tandem bike, celebrating the life of wish kid Sarah, a vibrant teen who fought bravely against cancer, and community partner, Dave & Busters, who help sponsor wish sendoff parties and always treat wish families so special with attention and gifts.

These stories remind her of the resilience and spirit of wish families and the importance of creating joy during difficult times.

When asked what she loves most about volunteering, Sarah exclaimed, “Meeting the kids!” Her advice for future Wish Granter volunteers? “Be ready for a life-changing experience. Your bad day pales in comparison to what these families are going through.”

Sarah’s favorite wish? A day at Disney World! Her commitment and compassion embody the heart of Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas, proving that volunteers truly make wishes possible.
