Meet Duke Snider: From First Wish to 40 and Counting

If you ask someone how they were first introduced to Make-A-Wish, you’ll hear many different answers. A high school fundraiser. A sibling’s wish. A story shared at a dinner table. For Duke Snider, it started with a TV commercial — and it changed his life.

“I’ve always loved working with kids, so I went to the training session and that was it. I was hooked.”

Since 2016, Duke has granted more than 40 wishes, and he’s not slowing down anytime soon.

Whether it’s helping a Wish Kid during a shopping spree or sending a family off to Hawaii, Duke brings compassion and care to every wish he helps grant.

One of the moments that’s stuck with him the most was his very first wish.

“When the limo showed up for his airport send-off, he was so excited he started coming out before they even got his wheelchair ready,” Duke recalled with a laugh.

Moments like those are what keeps him going.

Something that never fails to amaze me is the strength of a wish and how it helps Wish Kids through really tough times — helping them battle through their illness.

Volunteer since 2016

Over the years, Duke has seen the impact of a wish far beyond the Wish Kid. He’s witnessed siblings feel included, parents experience a sense of normalcy, and the Arizona community step up to create unforgettable moments.

“My favorite part about volunteering for Make-A-Wish is seeing how people rally. From Red Robin hosting wish celebrations and generous in-kind donations to airport send-offs. The community support is incredible.”

Duke’s dedication has inspired others in his network to get involved, including his sister and friends.

“To anyone thinking about volunteering, I say just do it,” he said. “It’s like being Santa Claus! You get to tell a kid their wish is coming true. How could you not want to be part of that?”

Volunteering has changed Duke, too.

It puts life in perspective. You realize how strong these kids are — and how lucky we are. I definitely get more out of this than I give.

If Duke could have a wish, he would wish to go to Greece.

As long as children continue to face critical illnesses, Make-A-Wish Arizona needs WishMakers like you to bring them hope and strength to fight.
