Noah's Wish to go to Disney World and Universal Studios

When Noah was 6 years old, he was having the time of his life in kindergarten. He loved playing with his friends during centers, at recess, and afterschool. Throughout the year, his parents noticed that Noah was always out of breath when running and playing. After several specialists’ visits, they received a diagnosis that would make our hearts sink.

Noah was diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension. “We did the thing parents are always told not to do – we Googled the diagnosis. And for the next couple years, fear was a primary feeling in our household.” his mom, Amy said. As they navigated a two and a half week stay out-of-state, in Cincinnati, Noah’s parents noticed a flier for Make-A-Wish in the packet they had been given to thumb through to learn more about this condition.

“Immediately after receiving the phone call to start thinking through what fun things Noah might want to do, we felt overwhelmed with excitement for something to look forward to. Noah ran through a couple of options, ultimately deciding to meet the MARVEL and Star Wars characters at Universal Studios and Disney World,” Amy shared.

When Noah looks back at his wish he recalls, “Going to Disney and Universal made me feel special. I didn’t have to worry about my pulmonary hypertension because they took care of me and my family.” Noah continued, “The thing I didn’t expect to love was the roller coasters. I loved the thrill and not knowing what was going to happen on the ride. It was awesome when the team members let me go back on my favorite rides again. The rides made me feel free.”

Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina still plays a big role in Noah life today. The team plans meaningful activities and outings that bring Wish families together. Noah especially loves the ones with the UNC Tar Heels. Noah has met some incredible athletes that he’s been able to tell all about his Wish trip. With a smile, Amy says, “When we reminisce on Noah’s trip, we’re flooded with happy memories. We enjoy looking back at photos and remembering how great it felt to not worry about appointments, therapies, and everything that comes with being a complex medical family. We truly want everyone to experience the freedom and genuine joy we felt that week in Orlando.”
