New Jersey Devils and Make-A-Wish New Jersey fulfill hockey dream of 13-year-old New Jersey who is battling cystic fibrosis

This is Around ocean County. Today’s guest is Tom Weatherall, CEO and President of Make A Wish New Jersey and Diane Piccheri, Howell resident whose son Niko is a Make A Wish recipient this year. Tom spoke about the organization’s continued granting of wishes for New Jersey children despite the COVID pandemic. Although the many trips to Disneyland and other places the children wished to go, they were replaced by online gift wishes and local trips. (Part 1 of 2)

Today’s guest is Tom Weatherall, CEO and President of Make A Wish New Jersey and Diane Piccheri, Howell resident whose son Niko is a Make A Wish recipient this year. Niko is a 14 year old boy battling non-hodgkins lymphoma, and decided to use part of his wish gift to give other children in the hospital a Playstation and large television, so they could enjoy playing while undergoing treatment. Who doesn’t love the simplicity of swinging on a swing and taking in the sights of the neighborhood? Those are two favorite pastimes for a boy in Bernardsville named Neil. Neil, who is a growing ten-year old and also uses a wheelchair was finding it harder and harder to enjoy a regular swing, so Neil had a wish – to have an outdoor wheelchair swing – and that wish was recently granted by Make-A-Wish New Jersey.

With "happy hands" and "happy feet," Neil Hajjar took a ride in his new wheelchair swing as he watched a convoy of hundreds of police cars, firetrucks and other vehicles drive past his West Street home.

Karina Frayle, who has finished treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, shared her wish by creating a virtual camp watched by kids across the globe.
