Director of Finance
Make-A-Wish® New Jersey, creating life-changing wishes for children battling critical illnesses in the Garden State with the belief that a wish experience can be a game-changer seeks a full-time experienced Director of Finance. This individual will join our team at our Monroe Township, NJ castle facility. The Director of Finance will oversee daily accounting operations, payroll, and financial reporting as well as play a key role in financial oversight and compliance. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and supervises one employee.
Accounting & Financial Operations
- Oversee general ledger activities, ensuring accurate journal entries and account reconciliations using NetSuite.
- Supervise accounts payable, including financial review of purchase orders, invoices, employee and volunteer reimbursements, and business credit card reconciliations for accuracy, completeness, and coding.
- Ensure proper authorization and documentation of expenditures in compliance with internal policies.
- Oversee reconciliation of wish assist billings and payments to the National organization.
- Maintain financial documentation to support audit and compliance requirements.
- Review financial analysis and Excel spreadsheets in support of accounting processes.
- Oversee year-end activities, including Form 1099s, annual audit, and IRS Form 990 and 945 compliance.
Bank & Cash Management
- Supervise timely reconciliations for three bank accounts and monitor cash transactions.
- Ensure accurate recording of deposits, transfers, bank fees, and other bank activities as part of revenue accounting.
- Oversee review of daily Salesforce donation batches for accurate revenue recording.
- Ensure proper reconciliation of petty cash and related documentation.
Payroll & Benefits Administration
- Oversee semi-monthly payroll for approximately 30 employees, ensuring accurate processing and compliance.
- Coordinate with payroll service provider (Extensis) and HR on employee records, deductions, and benefit payments.
- Ensure accurate review of payments for health insurance and other payroll-related expenses.
- Monitor staff paid time-off records and vacation accrual calculations.
- Oversee year-end activities, including W-2 administration and payroll tax compliance.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Supervise the month-end close and review financial statements and scorecards.
- Oversee budget variance analysis and expense reviews.
- Assist with the annual budget development process.
- Maintain and update internal control policies, financial procedures, and compliance documentation.
Investment & Endowment Accounting
- Review investment-related journal entries, ensuring accurate tracking of income, transfers, and gains/losses.
- Monitor endowment performance and ensure appropriate release of restricted funds.
- Supervise reconciliation of investment accounts and ensure accurate financial reporting.
Audit & Compliance Support
- Oversee preparation of supporting schedules and documentation for the annual audit.
- Supervise preparation of IRS filings, including Form 990.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and internal policies.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 7+ years of accounting experience, including financial reporting and internal controls.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP), Word, and Outlook.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Experience overseeing accounting controls and improving financial processes.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, leadership, and external auditors.
- Willing and able to work nights and weekends, when necessary
- Must pass a background and credit check.

Preferred Skills, Abilities and Requirements: :
- CPA certification preferred; MBA a plus.
- Supervisory and audit experience.
- Experience with NetSuite and Salesforce.
- Payroll and HR experience, including benefits processing.
- Experience working in a nonprofit organization.
