The stress of treatment for childhood cancer puts an enormous strain on the whole family. For wish kids and their families, it often seems like every day is consumed by their diagnosis - from missing family gatherings, to navigating complex diagnosis and treatment, to living with the uncertainties of a critical illness.

While battling cancer, 16-year-old Ciara’s treatment and hospital stays pulled her away from the family-time she loves . She missed hanging out with her parents at their home in Great Mills, MD, and playing with her siblings. When Ciara found out Make-A-Wish® Mid-Atlantic would be granting her a wish, she immediately knew what she wanted to do. She wished for something to bring her closer to her family once again - to go on a tropical family vacation!

When surveyed, 96% of parents say their child’s wish experience strengthened their family. Wishes like Ciara’s can bring families together around a moment of joy and reunite them in experience beyond their day-to-day treatments.

The highlight of Ciara’s wish trip was her father flying home and joining them. Ciara’s dad is a member of the military, and stationed oversees. He was able to take leave and spend quality time with the family on the trip. Ciara missed him so much and she wanted to involve him in every part of her wish. Her number one request was to take surfing lessons because she loves to swim in the water and wanted to learn something new. Ciara and her family also went to a show, where they danced the night away and enjoyed local cuisine.

Ciara’s wish brought her family back together when she needed their support the most. Taking in the sunshine and having new experiences together on their trip created memories that will last forever and serve as a reminder to Ciara to stay strong during her toughest moments.
