Austin's Alaskan Haven - ODM

In Aldie, Virginia, resides a remarkable 15-year-old boy named Austin. Behind his sweet demeanor lies an immense strength as he faces the daily challenges tied to his heart condition. Despite his limitations, Austin finds constant joy in the company of his parents and three younger brothers. Whether watching movies or playing games together, this tight-knit family of six cherishes the special moments at home.

Recognizing Austin's need for a space where he can unwind and connect with his family, his parents took the initiative to dedicate a room in their home to Austin offering a comfortable and relaxing retreat, equipped with puzzles and a television. It soon came to light that with a wish, Austin's getaway space could be taken to a new level with the support of Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic.

After meeting with wish-granting volunteers, Austin and his family worked together with the Make-A-Wish team to confirm his wish plans- a transformation of his current basement with a one-of-a-kind room renovation. The goal was to create a space where the entire family could come together and momentarily escape from reality. The family chose to have the theme of the new space resemble an Alaskan cabin, creating a unique and personalized oasis for Austin. Austin's father is a recently retired Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Space Force, making this room redo a place that he, Austin, and the entire family can utilize to relax and unwind.

The renovation project, created and funded by Design for Change, turned a wish into a reality. The refreshed basement now provides Austin and his family with a central gathering place, where they can create lasting memories together. In the face of adversity, Austin and his family find hope, support, and a renewed sense of joy through the generosity and effort of those who believe in the transformative power of a wish.

Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic honors our uniformed services families, with wish kids like Austin whose parents are serving or have served in the military.
