Teri Crawford, Rock Falls
After becoming an empty nester, Teri found herself uncertain about how to spend her newfound free time outside of work. For years, she had devoted much of her evenings and weekends to attending her children's sports practices and activities, which she cherished. Without those commitments, she struggled to figure out how she wanted to spend her time in a meaningful way.
"I was hoping that [volunteering] would help me find a sense of purpose and community again,” Teri explained.
Teri first learned about Make-A-Wish through a social media video featuring a California wish kid who had recently had their wish granted to become a superhero for a day. Seeing the joy the experience brought this boy and his family, Teri wanted to explore her options for getting involved. After researching opportunities near her home in northwestern Illinois, she connected with Make-A-Wish Illinois.
Since becoming a volunteer, Teri has supported over thirty wish families in and around Rock Falls through their wish journeys. As both a wish discovery and celebration volunteer, Teri engages with wish kids and their families at pivotal moments—helping them uncover their heartfelt wish or celebrating with them just before it comes to life. She loves event planning, which serves her well planning unforgettable wish send-offs or celebrations.
"Teri is always compassionate and is a great relationship builder," said Janet, the Senior Community Engagement Manager at the chapter. "She's a wonderful steward for the vendors and donors in her community. We need more caring volunteers like her."
When not working or volunteering, Teri enjoys trying new restaurants, spending quality time with her family and grandkids, camping, and embarking on road trips.
In April 2024, Teri Crawford was awarded the Local Partnership Award by Make-A-Wish Illinois. This award recognizes volunteers who secure exceptional in-kind support or assistance to enhance a wish child’s journey.
"It [volunteering with Make-A-Wish] has brought me a sense of purpose, identity, pride and accomplishment."
