Benjamin Meets Mickey

Benjamin, 6, from Kankakee, has a big heart with an even bigger smile. Though he faces the challenges of epilepsy, he remains a joyful and energetic child who loves to laugh and explore the world around him. His family has always focused on making sure he gets to enjoy life just like any other child.

When Benjamin was referred to Make-A-Wish by four different people, including his doctor and medical team, the family couldn’t have been more grateful. His doctors, who had witnessed Benjamin’s spirited personality shine through despite his medical struggles, knew that a trip to Walt Disney World would bring him a sense of freedom and joy.

“It was all amazing,” Benjamin’s mom, Jonna, said. “We had no complaints. Everything was taken care of, and Benjamin had such a great time. We were kept informed every step of the way, and it was such a smooth process.”

Soon, the family was on their way to Disney, with a trip planned to give Benjamin the experience he deserved—a magical, carefree adventure. For Benjamin, this trip wasn’t just a vacation—it was an escape from his medical challenges, a chance to feel like every other kid.

“They treated him like a regular kid, not just a child with a medical issue,” she shared. “To see him enjoy the rides, to see his face light up with excitement—it was everything. He was finally able to be carefree, without worrying about appointments, medications, or anything else.”

For Benjamin, the trip brought something special. “He was free,” Jonna explained. “He got to have fun without needing his nurse. It was so great to see him silly and carefree. It gave him a chance to really enjoy himself.”

Benjamin had several favorite moments, but one stood out. “Meeting Mickey Mouse was the highlight,” Jonna recalled. “Benjamin was so excited that he licked Mickey’s nose! The photographers were almost in tears, they were so moved by how happy Benjamin was.”

Looking back, Jonna believes the wish made a lasting impact on Benjamin. “It was a chance for him to feel normal,” she said. “He didn’t feel different because of his medical equipment. At Disney, he just felt like any other kid enjoying the magic. It was the most special feeling as a parent.”

“We’re constantly stressed, constantly thinking about Benjamin’s health, his treatments, his medications. The wish was an amazing break from all of that. It gave us a chance to just enjoy being a family and experience something magical together.”

For Jonna, seeing Benjamin’s smile and excitement was a reminder of how important it is for children like him to feel joy and freedom. “It’s such a powerful thing to see your child happy and healthy in that moment. Disney really gave him the chance to just be a kid again.”
