40 Years of Wishes

Donovan's wish to be the Silver Ranger

Diagnosed with a rare neuromuscular disorder at just six years old, wish kid Donovan grew up learning to face challenges with courage and optimism. At this young age, his family had inspired him to compare his degenerative disorder of the nervous system to the burden carried by superheroes - extraordinary individuals who overcome obstacles and use their powers to do great things.

That perspective stuck with him. Donovan developed a deep fascination with superheroes and embraced the idea that his illness gave him the strength to become someone extraordinary. So, when the time came to make his wish, the answer felt natural: he wanted to be the Silver Ranger.

In April 2007, at just 10 years old, Donovan stepped into the role of a lifetime. His wish began with a dramatic call for help as a special newscast warned that evil villains had invaded the Make-A-Wish Hudson Valley Wish House. Only one hero could save the day: the Silver Ranger.

Dressed in a custom silver costume, Donovan sprang into action alongside fellow Power Rangers, chasing down bad guys and battling monsters across the Wish House and neighboring towns. With the support of the Tarrytown Police Department, New York State Police, local partners, and a team of dedicated volunteers, the day unfolded and was filmed like a real-life action movie. Donovan even rode in a red Lamborghini as he worked to defeat the villains and restore peace to the Wish House. The adventure ended with a celebratory wrap party at the Tarrytown Marriott, where he was welcomed and cheered on like the hero he truly was.

And the magic of Donovan’s wish didn’t end when the cameras stopped rolling.

On May 21, 2007, the community gathered at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Peekskill for the world premiere of The Silver Ranger, the film created from Donovan’s wish experience. Friends, family, classmates, Wish alumni, and supporters lined the sidewalk as he arrived on the red carpet, stepping out of his limousine to the cheers of fans chanting his name. Inside the theater, the excitement was electric as the audience watched Donovan’s heroic journey unfold on the big screen - a story made possible by an entire community coming together to share the power of a wish.

Reflecting on that experience, Donovan shared a realization that has stayed with him ever since: “Upon completing this task of making a superhero movie, I realized that anything is possible.”

That belief became the lasting impact of his wish.

Now 29 years old, Donovan continues to carry the spirit of the Silver Ranger with him. He has remained closely connected to Make-A-Wish Hudson Valley, joining the Alumni Committee and supporting chapter events, and even graduated from college in recent years.  His story has become part of the fabric of the Wish House - a reminder to staff, volunteers, and wish families that a wish is more than a moment; it’s a catalyst for confidence, hope, and lifelong connection.

Donovan’s wish didn’t just transform one day. It brought a community together, inspired countless others, and showed a young boy that he could be the hero of his own story. Nearly two decades later, that impact is still felt, reminding every child who walks through the Wish House doors that anything is possible. 💙
