A Glimpse into the Future
Those dreams went on hold when she was diagnosed with cancer. “When your child has a critical illness, it consumes you completely. Nothing else in the world matters,” said Micaela’s dad, Rich.
While Micaela was in the hospital, the prospect of a life- changing wish gave her and her family reprieve from so much uncertainty and fear. Micaela wished for something that truly spoke to her heart – to be a cardiothoracic surgeon.
For one week, Micaela shadowed some of the best professionals in cardiothoracic science. She observed surgeries from inside the operating room. She discovered a mentor and learned about the business and research aspects of medicine. “It was more than just looking at my future, it was helping me decide who I want to be, where I want to go and how I can make that happen,” Micaela said.
“Everyone who has ever made a donation to Make-A-Wish ... the gift you have given my daughter is beyond measure,” Rich said.
