When Charles “Ed” Suber passed away in 2007, Jim Campbell lost a valued member of his family. The two cousins spent years living just three miles apart, and Mr. Campbell was Mr. Suber’s caregiver for nearly 12 years.
His passing also left Mr. Campbell with the responsibility of creating a legacy to honor his cousin. Mr. Campbell formed the Charles Edwin Suber Foundation, which has donated to many charitable causes important to its namesake. Mr. Suber’s success in business ensured the foundation could be generous to many different causes, including one whose work spanned generations of the Campbell family: Make-A-Wish®.
Mr. Campbell’s granddaughter, Allie, was just 3 years old when she was diagnosed with cancer. She wished for a trip to her favorite theme park in Florida, and the experience brought a wonderful sense of healing and optimism to the family. Today, Allie is 14 years old and cancer-free.
"She’s just enjoying life, and she’s a studious person," Mr. Campbell said.
Mr. Campbell never forgot how the life-affirming gift of a wish experience helped Allie. The entire family took the joyful Make-A-Wish mission to heart. As trustee, he donated more than $600,000 to Make-A-Wish on behalf of the Charles Edwin Suber Foundation.
"That was just one of our choices," Mr. Campbell said.
Mr. Campbell decided to create an endowment fund. That allows the donation to live in perpetuity, granting the wishes of courageous children with life-threatening medical conditions for generations to come. Each year, the Charles Edwin Suber Foundation’s gift will fund the wishes of approximately four children in a five-state area – Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and Mississippi.
Endowment funds are a major component of the Make-A-Wish Wishes Forever® campaign, which is committed to ensuring a bright future for our efforts to transform lives, one wish at a time.
