Wish Kid Charlie - Summer of Wishes

Charlie, Charlie, What is Your Wish?

When Charlie was just two years old, he was diagnosed with leukemia and began intensive treatment, including chemotherapy, bone marrow biopsies and spinal taps. For more than two years, cancer shaped his childhood—but it never dimmed his bright spirit.

During his month-long stay at the hospital, Charlie found comfort in books. He amazed doctors, nurses and everyone he met by reading his favorite story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, at an age when most children are just beginning to recognize letters.

In October 2025, Charlie finished treatment and was cancer-free. When given the opportunity to have a wish granted he chose a wish that reflected everything he had been through: a room makeover.

While Charlie was immunocompromised, his family had to leave the home they had purchased when he was just a baby because it was no longer safe for him. They lived with family, and throughout treatment Charlie shared a room with his parents, with no space to call his own.
When they finally moved into an apartment to call home, Charlie’s room held only a bed and a toy box. His wish was for a cozy new room filled with his favorite books—a space that felt like his own—with Eric Carle’s colorful stories inspiring the design including bugs hand-painted by his mom, Great Grammie and Nanna, along with cherished paintings saved from his nursery.

Charlie talks about his room makeover every day, excited for the special pieces he chose, from a Bluey-inspired kiwi rug and play kitchen to his new big boy bed. Most of all, he is looking forward to the books: a cozy reading corner, a place to display his ever-growing library and, as his family says, “a new book request almost every day.”

For Charlie’s family, the wish is about more than a bedroom. While Charlie was battling cancer, his beloved grandmother, “Guelita,” was also fighting cancer. Her passing in June brought profound loss, making this wish a meaningful step toward healing.

One of Charlie’s favorite lines from Wonka is, “I’ve got a hat full of dreams.” That phrase captures Charlie perfectly. After everything he has faced, he never stopped dreaming—and soon, he will have a special place to nurture those dreams.

“Charlie’s wish has given us the chance to heal...After years of feeling like life just kept knocking us down, Make-A-Wish Connecticut made us feel seen, supported, and hopeful again.”
