Everlasting Hope and Joy with Sadie

When Sadie was just a year and a half old, her family began a journey that would reshape their lives in ways they never expected. Years of navigating seizures, medical emergencies, and uncertainty followed, and with them came strength, joy, and hope.

Today, Sadie is a talented teen, an advocate, a wish alum, and this holiday seasons featured artist whose experience continues to fuel her confidence and strengthen her voice.

In this special conversation, Sadie and her mom, Jennifer, reflect on the challenges they faced, the power of a wish, and the memories that continue to guide their family forward.

To begin, Sadie, can you tell us a little about yourself and what you enjoy doing?

I am 14 years old, live in Austin, and was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was about 1½ years old. I have two pets, a cat and a dog. In my free time, I enjoy running, putting puzzles together, and watching the Longhorns.

Jennifer, how would you describe Sadie and the kind of person she is?

Sadie is such a joy! She brightens every room with her smile and laughter, and she has an amazing ability to make others laugh too. Beyond her cheerful spirit, she has a deep drive to help people whether volunteering in the community or supporting her family at home. Her kindness, generosity, and selflessness inspire everyone around her.

Thinking back, how did your illness impact your life and your family when you were first diagnosed, Sadie?

When I was first diagnosed with epilepsy, I was too young to fully understand what was happening, since it happened around 1 1⁄2 years old. But it still had a big impact on my life and on my family. My parents had to learn a lot very quickly about my condition, how to recognize seizures, and how to keep me safe. There were more doctor visits, tests, and treatments added to our routine. Even though I don’t remember the very beginning, my diagnosis shaped the way my family and I approached things as I grew up. They became extra careful about my health, and I learned over time how to understand my condition, manage it, and take care of myself. It definitely changed parts of my life, but it also helped me become stronger, more aware, and more resilient.

Jennifer, can you share what Sadie’s medical journey looked like before you learned about Make-A-Wish Central and South Texas?

Sadie was diagnosed with a rare and complex form of epilepsy at around one and a half years old. Prior to her epilepsy diagnosis, she underwent emergency brain surgery for a Chiari Malformation, which was unrelated to her seizures. Over the years, she has faced more medical challenges than many experiences in a lifetime. The height of her seizure activity was between the ages of 4 and 9. Most recently, she remains stable during the day, but her seizure activity occurs mainly overnight, preventing her from entering a full REM sleep cycle. She has experienced numerous types of seizures that have affected her ability to learn, speak, and sleep. Sadie has tried many medications and therapies, adjusted her lifestyle including changes to her sleep and diet all while learning to navigate life being different from others. Her seizures were so uncontrolled at one point the doctors recommended a hemispherectomy (removal of part of brain or disconnect). We had a second opinion, tried different medications to avoid this invasive surgery and changed to homeschooling when traditional schooling could no longer accommodate her unique needs. This change allowed her to thrive in a more personalized learning environment, where she could grow and succeed on her own terms.

Jennifer, how did your family first learn about Make-A-Wish Central and South Texas?

Sadie's Neurologist had nominated her.

Sadie, how did you feel when you learned you would be receiving a wish?

When I found out I was going to be granted a wish, I felt amazed and excited. It was one of those moments where everything feels unreal at first, like, “Is this really happening to me?” After dealing with doctor visits, treatments, and the challenges of epilepsy for so long, it felt really special to have something completely positive to look forward to.

Jennifer, what was Sadie’s reaction when she found out a wish would be granted?

When Sadie found out she was going to have her wish granted, she was overwhelmed with excitement and joy. Her eyes lit up, and she couldn’t stop smiling. It was a moment of pure happiness and disbelief after so many medical challenges, she finally had something to look forward to that was entirely for her. The news gave her a sense of hope and excitement, and she couldn’t wait to experience the adventure she had been dreaming about.

Sadie, what inspired the wish you chose?

What inspired the wish I chose was my love for Hawaii’s beautiful, colorful beaches and my excitement about seeing the place where Jurassic Park was filmed. I also really wanted to drink fresh coconut water right on the beach.

What was the most memorable or meaningful part of your wish experience, Sadie?

My favorite part of the trip was taking a boat along the Nā Pali Coast, a place so remote it’s only accessible by boat or helicopter. As we cruised along the jagged cliffs and emerald valleys, the scenery felt like something out of a dream. Dolphins leapt through the crystal clear water, and schools of colorful fish swam right beneath us. I even got to snorkel and saw them up close. The day ended with a breathtaking sunset. It was a magical experience I’ll never forget.

Jennifer, what was the best part of the wish experience for Sadie and for your family?

The best part of Sadie’s wish experience was seeing her light up with pure joy and excitement. For her, it was the freedom to explore, have fun, and experience something magical that was entirely hers like visiting Hawaii, seeing the beautiful beaches, and experiencing the Nā Pali Coast. For our family, the best part was sharing those unforgettable moments together, watching her confidence grow, and creating memories that we will cherish forever. The experience brought us all closer and reminded us of the power of hope, love, and resilience.

What did your wish experience mean to you personally, Sadie?

My wish experience meant so much because, for the first time, it allowed me to simply be a child, free from the weight of medical challenges. It gave me a lifetime of treasured memories and affirmed my ability to believe in myself. It showed me that I am deeply loved, that my voice carries value, and that my journey holds profound meaning.

Jennifer, how did her wish help Sadie face her medical challenges?

Sadie’s wish experience gave her a renewed sense of hope, strength, and confidence that has carried over into facing her medical challenges. After experiencing something so joyful and empowering, she felt reminded of her own resilience and ability to overcome obstacles. The adventure allowed her to focus on what she could enjoy and accomplish, rather than only on her medical limitations. It inspired her to keep pushing forward, stay positive, and approach her daily challenges with courage and determination.

Sadie, many wish alumni talk about hope and strength. How does your wish continue to influence your life now?

My wish experience continues to impact my life every day by giving me hope, confidence, and the courage to pursue my dreams. It reminded me that even with challenges, amazing things are possible.

How would you describe your life today, Sadie?

My life has changed so much for the better since my wish. Every day, I am reminded of my worth and have something special to look back on that made a lasting impact. I am thriving as a homeschooler and have found my voice advocating for others through the Epilepsy Foundation’s Teens Speak Up program. Most recently, I even went to Washington DC to discuss education, research, and legislation. A step I don’t think I could have taken before my Make A Wish experience. My wish gave me confidence, passion, and the belief that I can make a difference.

Jennifer, what helped your family get through the hardest days?

Sadie's courage and determination, even on the toughest days, reminded us to stay strong and keep moving forward. Support from family, friends, and the medical community also made a huge difference, as did focusing on small moments of joy and progress. Most of all, our faith in her resilience and the hope for brighter days.

Is there anything you want people to understand about you or your wish experience, Sadie?

I want people to know that my wish experience was truly life changing. It gave me a chance to be a kid, to explore, and to experience something magical that I had dreamed about. It reminded me of my own strength and resilience, and gave me confidence to face challenges I never thought I could. Most importantly, it showed me that I am deeply loved and that my journey matters. My wish didn’t just give me an amazing adventure it gave me hope, joy, and memories I will treasure forever.

Thank you, Sadie and Jennifer, for taking time to share your wish story with us and with the community. We are grateful for you both, and I know how important it is for you to speak up for yourself and for others.
