Please note: Make-A-Wish Arizona volunteer opportunities are designed for adults 18 years of age or older. To be a wish granter volunteer and work with children with life-threatening medical conditions, you must be at least 21 years of age, complete a screening interview, and successfully complete a criminal background check. Individuals under 18 years old are encouraged to check out our Kids For Wish Kids or Wishmakers on Campus programs.

Volunteer Types


A volunteer translator/interpreter accompanies Make-A-Wish Arizona staff and volunteers during wish family visits to facilitate clear communication. Translators/interpreters may also assist with the translation of documents and other organizational material. This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check and yearly confidentiality agreement. 

Wish Granter

A volunteer wish granter will meet with the wish child and his/her family to help determine the child’s most heartfelt wish while planning special enhancements throughout the wish process. Wish granters work in teams of two or three alongside Make-A-Wish Arizona staff to ensure every eligible child’s wish comes true. This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check and yearly confidentiality agreement. 

Wish Ambassador (Speaker’s Bureau)

A wish ambassador volunteer will present key information and share stories regarding Make-A-Wish Arizona to community organizations, corporations, schools, and internal or external events. Through these efforts the wish ambassador volunteer will aim to increase the audience’s awareness and support for Make-A-Wish Arizona. This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check and yearly confidentiality agreement. 

Event Volunteer

An event volunteer assists with the planning and execution of various Make-A-Wish Arizona internal and external events. Assistance is occasionally required for wish granting and other mission-related events. This position requires completion of a yearly conflict of interest and confidentiality agreement. 

Airport Greeter

A volunteer airport greeter meets wish families at designated airports upon their arrival or departure for their wish experience. This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check and yearly confidentiality agreement. 

Office Volunteer

Office volunteers play a vital role in performing everyday tasks at the Make-A-Wish Arizona Parsons Wish House in Scottsdale. Tasks may include helping with mailings, answering phones, and data entry as well as long-term projects. We welcome volunteers with skills in finance, event planning, data entry, and a variety of other fields. Office volunteers who lend us their time on a weekly basis adhering to the same schedule each week work on long-term projects over which they take ownership. Some office volunteer tasks may require the successful completion of a criminal background check. 


Make-A-Wish Arizona internships are coveted, both because of the inspiring mission and because interns get real-world experience alongside talented professionals. We offer several unpaid internships for each of the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters. All internships are based in the Make-A-Wish Arizona Wish House in Scottsdale. Ongoing efforts to support and properly train our staff and volunteers require skilled trainers and facilitators. This volunteer role is perfect for people who enjoying engaging adult learners utilizing a variety of activities in order to best retain information. Experience in training and facilitation is necessary for this volunteer role.

  • STEP ONE: Create a volunteer profile in the Wish & Volunteer Center  
    All Make-A-Wish Arizona volunteers utilize our Wish & Volunteer Center. Prospective volunteers must create a new profile to begin the application process.   
  • STEP TWO: Register and attend the online volunteer orientation in Make-A-Wish University 
    Once prospective volunteers create their online profile, they must enroll and complete the Volunteer Orientation Learning Path in Make-A-Wish University. This free e-learning path includes two 20 minute self-guided courses designed to introduce prospective volunteers to the history, vision and value of Make-A-Wish as well as their various roles at Make-A-Wish. 
  • STEP THREE: Complete a volunteer application 
    Log in to the Wish & Volunteer Center to complete a volunteer application. After the application is submitted, a staff member will be in touch to schedule an in-person screening interview.  
  • STEP FOUR: Attend a screening interview 
    All volunteer applications are reviewed by our Volunteer Screening Team. All volunteer positions require a brief interview with our Volunteer Screening Team to ensure a suitable fit for the volunteer role. Interviews are held the second Saturday of every month at the Parsons Wish House in Scottsdale. Please reserve a future Saturday in anticipation of this interview. Prospective volunteers outside the metro Phoenix area will be contacted with upcoming screening interview dates in their region. Interviews may be conducted in person, via web video conferencing or teleconference.  
  • STEP FIVE: Criminal background check 
    Due to the nature of our work, select volunteer positions require the successful completion of a criminal background check every three years. Make-A-Wish Arizona does not employ or utilize as a volunteer any individual who has been convicted of a crime that (a) victimizes children, (b) is sexual in nature, or (c) involves violence, fraud, or significant theft.   • STEP SIX: Attend an in-depth training 
    Certain volunteer roles require an in-depth training prior to becoming a volunteer. Trainings for all wish granters MUST be done in person. Trainings for other roles may be conducted via web conference, Skype, FaceTime or other virtual methods. Attendance for the entire duration of the the training is required. The dates and locations of these trainings are sent to qualified applicants.  
  • STEP SEVEN: Get involved! 
    Qualified volunteers have access to upcoming opportunities for which they are certified in the Wish and Volunteer Center. Volunteers should routinely check the Wish and Volunteer Center as volunteer opportunities are continuously added. Volunteers who would like to become certified in additional volunteer roles should self-enroll in the available training opportunities pertaining to those roles or contact the Volunteer Services Team at [email protected]
