Will's Wish: A Backyard Sanctuary

Will is 11 years old, and he experiences the world in a way that is uniquely his own. Born with an ultra-rare epilepsy disorder and nonverbal, Will’s joy shines brightest when he can explore through touch.

Will is 11 years old, and he experiences the world in a way that is uniquely his own. Born with an ultra-rare epilepsy disorder and nonverbal, Will’s joy shines brightest when he can explore the world through touch. The cool smoothness of a stone, the gentle ripple of water, the sway of a swing in the breeze. For Will, these moments aren’t just play; they are how he connects with the world around him.

When it came time to dream about his Wish, it felt only right that it would be something that could bring those simple wonders to life every day.

For two years, Will and his family worked with Make-A-Wish Vermont & Northeast New York to design a sensory garden: a space that would bring him joy and calm in equal measure. After lots of brainstorming and creative collaboration, the vision took shape. Will’s custom-built garden would be right in his backyard!

The magic unfolded in Middlebury VT, where local contractors, businesses, and volunteers came together to make Will’s dream a reality. In just one day, the yard was transformed into a sanctuary filled with Will’s favorite things, including a three-person sensory swing, a bubbling fountain, river stones and boulders, soft turf to sit on, and bluestone steps leading the way. Every detail was chosen to create a safe, inviting space where Will can explore textures, sounds, and movement.

Will’s Mom said the garden will be life-changing.

Not all playgrounds fit everybody, so this one is really unique, and Make-A-Wish allowed us to make something really unique and that fits Will, so we’re super-grateful,” she said.

For years to come, this sensory garden will be a sanctuary where Will’s Wish, and the magic behind it, continues to grow.
