A Rising Star Gets Her Wish

It was a perfect late-spring evening for a ball game at Centennial Field in Burlington, Vermont. And as the sun slowly began its descent over Lake Champlain to the west, the crowd began to stream in. Along with the usual band of die-hard Lake Monsters fans, dozens of Make-A-Wish families arrived for Make-A-Wish Night. Wish for a Community Stage

But it wasn’t the first big play of the game that brought everyone to their feet, it was something (actually, someone) a little bit smaller.

Wish Kid Lila, of Manchester Vermont, stepped up to home plate, took the microphone, and sang a heartfelt rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Now, one might think that’d be quite an undertaking for a six-year-old, but this is Lila we’re talking about. A singer and performer through and through, Lila lights up whenever she’s on stage.  As such, it was no surprise that her wish was to build a community stage in her hometown—a venue where she and those in her community can all step up and perform.

As Lila sang the final verse to thunderous applause, Make-A-Wish Vermont CEO Jamie Hathaway stepped in, kneeled next to Lila, and told her that her wish was granted; she (and her town) would be getting a brand-new community stage built by Vermont Construction Company at Hunter Park. Situated on 35 acres in the foothills of the Green Mountains, this beautiful park hosts sports, community events, and exhibitions for children, teens, adults, and families in Southern Vermont.

Make-A-Wish Family Night at Centennial Field was sponsored by Instramart, and included free tickets and a meal voucher for Make-A-Wish Kids and their families, gave Wish Kids the opportunity to meet the Lake Monsters team and their mascot, Champ, and even participate in the game. The festive evening culminated with a fireworks display for all in attendance to enjoy.

We’d like to extend a very special thank you to Instramart, Vermont Construction Company, Centennial Field, The Lake Monsters, Champ, and all our donors and supporters for helping make Lila’s wish come true.
