Nine-year-old Matilda has always loved telling stories. Whether she's writing, drawing, or doing a little bit of both during school lunch, creativity is her constant companion. And when she’s not creating stories of her own, she loves listening to them, especially with her mom. Their favorite? The Story Pirates.
The Story Pirates are a group of world-class comedians, musicians, authors, and teachers who bring original stories written by kids to life through sketch comedy and music. Each episode of their award-winning podcast starts with a story submission from a child and ends with a completely reimagined performance. While Matilda had been a loyal listener for years, she never had one of her own stories featured. That’s why, when it came time to choose a wish, she knew exactly what she wanted: To Meet the Story Pirates, and be part of the story herself.
Matilda had already seen them perform in Boston, but her Wish was something even more special. It was her chance to become part of the magic she loved so much. She sent in one of her own stories: a tale about a puppy who craves one delicious beverage more than any other. Then, she traveled to New York City to meet the Story Pirates in person.
Inside a bright and welcoming studio filled with musical instruments and recording equipment, Matilda got to step into their world. At first, she admitted, it felt a little scary. But from the moment she walked in, the Story Pirates made her feel welcome and at ease. Her parents shared just how thoughtful and inclusive the team was; Matilda was a part of the process every step of the way.
She visited The Relic Room, where the Story Pirates make all the magic happen, and she watched her story come to life as music and sound effects were added. She even got to be interviewed by one of the Story Pirates, where she talked about how she came up with her idea. It was a day full of the creativity that Matilda loves.
Matilda’s wish also included time to explore New York City with her family. Before her studio visit, they enjoyed sushi dinners, marveled at Times Square, and saw Wicked on Broadway, an experience that only added to the magic of the week.
The fun didn’t end there. A few months later, Matilda and her classmates gathered to listen to her story premiere on the podcast. Titled “How to Make Grilled Peaches / Peanut Butter Smoothies,” the episode even features custom cover art drawn by Matilda herself. Check it out, here.
