Roslyn

Roslyn's Cake Bake Wish is one of the sweetest wishes we've granted yet!

7-year-old Roslyn loves sugar, spending time with her siblings, and the Riley Hospital for Children care team who helped save her life.

“The other day, Roslyn said, ‘Mom, it’s like we’ve known the doctors our whole lives, but its just been the last couple of years,’” reflected Roslyn’s mom, Tai. At 4, Roslyn was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.

“They thought it was appendicitis, but it turned out she had a tumor in both kidneys.”

Roslyn immediately started chemotherapy and radiation and underwent multiple surgeries, which led to the removal of her entire right kidney and part of her left kidney. She spent a lot of time in the hospital.

“We got to meet some amazing doctors, nurses, and staff there; everyone is amazing,” said Tai. “Most of the time, she would look forward to going to Riley,” added Roslyn’s dad, Eric. “We’d say, okay, it’s time go down for three days or have chemo, and she’d say, ‘Oh, I get to see my doctors! I get to see my nurses!’ she’d actually look forward to those trips.” When asked to choose a wish, Roslyn said she wanted to bake cakes for her care team at the hospital. “Because they helped me!” said Roslyn. “They’ve just been really like family to us,” added Tai.

On the day of her wish, Roslyn, her parents, and two siblings came to The Cake Bake Shop, a fairytale cake shop known for its sparkling chandeliers, beautiful French décor and exquisite cakes served on porcelain platters topped with glass domes. “I make cake for a living, and I have the best job ever!” said Gwendolyn. “I really love children. How do you not help create a wish come true for a child? That’s what life is all about; it’s a dream come true for me. Any happiness I can spread to anyone else is literally a dream come true for myself. I love my job, and I’m so grateful you’re here today.”

Gwendolyn and Roslyn cracked eggs, mixed cake batter, decorated carrot cake (Roslyn’s favorite), and a mint chocolate cake. “I’m going to give them to my doctors because they helped me when I had cancer,” said Roslyn. After the cakes were cooled, frosted, and dusted with edible glitter, Roslyn surprised her doctors, nurses, social workers, and child-life specialists with her cake creations.

“How are you?” exclaimed one of her doctors who treated her cancer. “You got so big, and you’ve gotten some hair now!” “It was a tough road at first, but it’s wonderful right now,” said Tai. “We had scans on Tuesday just to check up, and they were all clear! We’re about two years away from her being cancer free. We’re absolutely grateful for this whole process. I’ve been extremely proud of my daughter and doing something selfless like that makes me even prouder. We’re grateful and blessed.”

Talk about one sweet wish!
