Volunteer Spotlight: Sam Jeppson

After moving to Texas two years ago, Sam was searching for ways to get involved in his school, Carroll Senior High School in Southlake. At the time, Sam was familiar with the Make-A-Wish mission, but his new school wasn’t involved in any wish-granting efforts or fundraising.

Each year, hundreds of schools across the country host “Wish Weeks” through the Make-A-Wish Kids for Wish Kids program to raise money to help grant more wishes. Through this fundraising program, students learn the importance of giving back and see firsthand how their efforts can positively impact the lives of others. Sam took the initiative to share this idea with several teachers at his school and soon enough, he became the leader of Wish Week at Carroll Senior.

“I felt inspired to try and start this fundraiser at my school after seeing how it changed my friends’ lives in my old town,” Sam said. “I love the experience. It’s not just about the amount of money raised, it’s about creating an experience that brings a community together and changes a child's life.”

As his school leader for Wish Week, Sam plans fun activities, secures sponsorships, creates fundraisers and manages a committee of other students who are passionate about the Make-A-Wish mission. Last spring, the school raised more than $15,000 for local wish kids during its very first Wish Week.

“It’s not always easy to get the process started, but once you do, it's one hundred percent worth it.  With planning and time, the community will get on board and then it’s amazing to see all you can accomplish,” Sam said.

Leading Wish Week has not only allowed Sam to raise funds for Make-A-Wish, but it’s also given him the chance to learn and grow. He’s developed his leadership skills, made incredible friends and discovered how to plan successful fundraisers all while rallying an entire community to make a difference for Wish kids.

“I love every moment of it. The amount of joy I feel when we reach our goal and get to meet the child is overwhelming. I can’t believe how amazing Make-A-Wish is, there’s nobody in the world like them,” Sam said.

When he’s not planning fundraisers for Make-A-Wish, Sam enjoys hanging out with his family, learning about cars and studying history. We’re grateful for Sam and all he does to support wish kids in the Southlake area and beyond!
