Our Story
Make-A-Wish began with a simple but extraordinary idea that proved when we band together for a child, we can change the world.
In 1980, seven-year-old Chris Greicius was battling leukemia when his community came together to grant his wish to be a police officer for a day. That moment changed more than one child’s life—it sparked a global movement grounded in the belief that hope is a powerful force in healing.
Today, Make-A-Wish serves children in nearly 50 countries and has granted over 620,000 wishes around the world. In the United States alone, a child is diagnosed with a critical illness nearly every 20 minutes. Research indicates that over 1,100 children throughout our 161-country territory will be diagnosed each year with a critical illness that qualifies them for a wish.
When a critical diagnosis comes, everything changes. Childhood becomes filled with treatments, hospital rooms, fear, and uncertainty. Parents are suddenly navigating medical systems, financial strain, and the heartbreak of watching their child struggle.
That’s where we come in.
Our Mission
Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
We can't grant wishes in our communities without volunteers like you!
