From Patient to Nurse: How Zac’s Wish Shaped His Future
The dedication and compassion of his nurses did not go unnoticed. It motivated him to request a very specific wish, one that shaped his future.
“My nurses were there for me during everything I went through, and they inspired me to become a nurse,” said Zac. “I wished for tuition assistance to go to nursing school because the clinical aspect fascinated me during my own chemo journey and I hope to make a difference, just like my nurses did for me.”
“It’s very rewarding,” shared Zac, who started in the neurological progressive care unit and brings his unique personal experience into every patient interaction. “Having been a patient myself helps me understand how people are feeling in the hospital. I enjoy connecting with families and seeing how I can support them.”
Looking back, Zac and his family remain grateful to Make-A-Wish Arizona for the role that his wish played in shaping his journey.
“Zac’s wish was a bright spot in his life during a difficult time and the beginning of him moving into what he feels is his purpose,” said his mom, Stephanie.
“When your child is going through something so hard, you really get to know your nurses and they feel like your second family,” she continued. “I hope Zac’s wish continues to serve as a catalyst for him to become just like the nurses he had, and to give back to the community that’s been such a big part of our lives during his cancer journey.”

“It’s bittersweet because I’ve had so many years with these nurses,” he reflected. “You spend so much time together and see them every day for weeks on end, it’s kind of sad in a way that I won’t see them as much now.”
From his treatment journey to college to his career, Zac appreciates the lessons learned and relationships he’s built with so many nurses who came before him.
“Nurses are the greatest advocates for patients. Even small things like bringing someone a cup of water, warming up their food, and answering questions to help them feel more at ease goes a long way to make a difference.”
“My nurses went out of their way to impact my life and make it better, which was a really positive experience that led me into this field,” he continued.
