Sue Heng, Oregon
Make-A-Wish Illinois announces Sue Heng of Oregon, Illinois as the recipient of the 2021 Local Partnership Award for her ability to secure exceptional in-kind support and assistance to enhance a wish child’s journey.
Since 2014, Sue has been creating hope for children with critical illnesses across the greater Rockford as a wish granting volunteer for Make-A-Wish Illinois. She puts her heart and soul into every wish, often involving local community organizations, first responders and theater groups to be part of a child’s wish journey. By getting to know the child well, Sue is able to add distinctive elements that make each wish a truly unique experience.
“All of these added touches are what bring the wish to life and create an extra special wish,” said Wish Coordinator Katie Cholewa.”
Creative and resourceful, Sue has had a hand in granting more than 30 wishes, including one for Savannah in Cherry Valley, who wished for an accessible swing that would fit her wheelchair. Through Sue’s connections she was able to get the concrete pad donated from Image Pros and enlist the support of the Belvidere Lions Club to help assemble the swing.
“I’ve learned so much as I’ve volunteered,” Sue said. “You just have to ask and it’s so awesome how generous people are when you mention Make-A-Wish.”
Sue says she continues to volunteer because there are many enjoyable aspects, from bringing community connections together to support a wish to the deep personal satisfaction she gets from giving children with critical illnesses a little of their control back through a wish.
“I feel so good when I’m able to pull off a fabulous reveal. It’s so heartwarming to be able to help and family and know that they are enjoying it as much as I am.”
