Where support becomes strength: Nash's parents provide the magic of a wish
Nash’s wish not only had a profound impact on him, but on his entire family. For parents, watching their child endure medical treatments, hospital visits, and countless appointments can create ongoing traumatic stress. A wish experience offers families a rare chance to step away from that strain, restore emotional wellbeing, strengthen familial bonds, and reconnect with their communities.
Because of Nash’s diagnosis, everyday tasks that many take for granted can be incredibly difficult for him. His mom, Lisa, explains, “It is a constant battle considering he is unable to do most everything we take for granted. He can be angry that we have to do everything and disappointed when he can't do things because it is not accessible. We can't take trips like we used to because air travel is not accessible, and long car trips and hotel beds aren't comfortable for him.”
For the first time since his diagnosis, Nash’s wish gave him and his family the chance to enjoy an experience together without worrying about caretaking, accessibility challenges, accommodations, or his condition.
“As a parent, it was so fun to see the sheer joy on his face as each new adventure unfolded,” recalls Nash’s mom, Lisa. “He was so happy and in such a good mood. We were able to enjoy each other instead of working and caretaking. It was great to get a mental break and experience real happiness and be excited about something.”
Throughout every step of the way, Nash and his family were able to sit back and enjoy his wish. That time meant as much to his parents and siblings as it did to Nash himself. “Our favorite part was experiencing it as a family; and being surprised and wowed alongside Nash was a treat to us too,” shared Lisa. “It meant so much to our family that we could forget about things for a while and just enjoy each other.”
Reflecting on the experience, Lisa describes it as nothing short of extraordinary: “Every part of our adventure was so meaningful and exceeded our expectations. The attention to detail was remarkable. They thought of everything to make this wish magical.”
Inspired by the impact of Nash’s wish, his parents have since become involved with Make-A-Wish Minnesota to help bring that same magic to other families. This spring, Lisa—a teacher in Fosston—hosted a spaghetti dinner at her school to raise money for Make-A-Wish Minnesota. In total, Lisa has raised over $8,100 so far through her Wish Your Way page!
Seeing their community come together to support a cause that touched their family so deeply is, in many ways, what a wish is all about. Their generosity will help ensure that more children experience the power and healing of a wish
Nash’s wish is a reminder of how powerful it is when a community surrounds a child with hope. We are so grateful for all the wish parents and siblings who experience the entire journey alongside the wish kids. Lisa captures that impact when she says, “Make-A-Wish means so much to the kids. To be treated as special and make them forget about their issues for just a little while is great. Mental health improves and the family can enjoy something together.”
