Beth's Volunteer Story

Around Effingham, a town in southeast Illinois, if you ask someone about Make-A-Wish, they will likely refer you to Beth Funneman to learn more. For nearly 15 years, Beth has gone above and beyond as a volunteer at Make-A-Wish Illinois, first as a wish granter and now bringing families and community together in support of current and future wish kids through a unique event.

While she’s spent almost three decades working in corporate sales, it’s the work with wish kids that brings her a special kind of fulfillment. As a mom of three, Beth spent years juggling school drop-offs, busy schedules, and everyday chaos. But as her kids grew older and more independent, she found some extra time on her hands. She knew she wanted to use this time wisely and began looking for ways to volunteer.

“I wanted to contribute to real change,” Beth said.

She learned that Make-A-Wish Illinois needed volunteers in the area and signed up for the first training she could find. At that training, she ran into a long-time family friend, reconnected and soon they became wish celebration partners working together.

Since then, Beth has helped to transform what it means to be a volunteer. She doesn’t just show up; she creates! After experiencing the power of a wish as volunteer on nearly 30 wishes, she continues to feel passionate about the impact and joy she can provide for so many children and families.

Still, Beth wanted to do more. She successfully planned a rodeo event that now draws more than 3,000 people annually, raising awareness, and bringing people together with purpose. The event, Buckin’ for Heroes, has raised more than $80,000 and hosted dozens of area wish families since Beth started organizing it.

She’s also a mastermind when it comes to creating some of the most elaborate and heartfelt wish reveals. From working with a local restaurant to build a princess castle and dressing their staff in princess costumes, to organizing a cheerleading surprise with more than 50 cheerleaders and a full arena audience. These moments are unforgettable for all involved and simply would not exist without Beth's creativity and initiative.

"The endless ways Beth shares the joy and excitement of a wish with others creates a magic that cannot be duplicated," said Helena Wynn, senior volunteer program coordinator at Make-A-Wish Illinois.

“Her creative and compassionate spirit is a gift to children, fellow volunteers, and the Illinois chapter,” shared Laura Huerta, another Make-A-Wish Illinois staff member who has worked with Beth for more than 13 years. “Beth's impact on the community is continuous and heartfelt, and the connections she has established will benefit Make-A-Wish Illinois and our wish kids for years to come.”

Beth has the ability to turn a single wish into something that touches hundreds of lives. She enjoys the community and connections she’s gained from her work. Whether that be with families, other volunteers, staff members, or people in her town, her dedication has helped so many understand the power of a wish.

“A wish can bring together so many people, create lasting relationships, and truly change lives,” Beth shares. She feels passionate in her ability to contribute towards impactful change, and she doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

Beth was recognized with the 2025 Community Impact Award from Make-A-Wish Illinois during National Volunteer week given to a volunteer whose efforts have significantly benefited the community.
