Volunteer Spotlight: Dave T.

What ways are you involved as a volunteer?
I’ve been primarily involved as a wish granter for nearly 14 years. I’ve also helped with airport meet-and-greets, but my heart is in working directly with wish kids and their families to help bring their dreams to life.

How did you first find Make-A-Wish?
I don’t remember exactly how I first found out about Make-A-Wish, but I do remember adding it to my dream list. One day I decided it was time to check that dream off—and I’m so glad I did. It’s been one of the most meaningful choices I’ve ever made.

How long have you been volunteering with Make-A-Wish MN?
It’s been almost 14 years now. I stopped counting the number of wishes long ago, but each one continues to leave a mark on my heart.

What has been the most rewarding experience of volunteering with Make-A-Wish?
Every wish brings its own joy, but I’ll never forget my very first. The child was nonverbal, and I was deeply moved by how much I could feel his excitement through the subtle signs he used to express joy. Watching his face light up was pure magic, and it reminded me how universal the language of joy and hope truly is.

What advice would you give to new volunteers?
Jump in! Let your energy, creativity, and compassion guide you. Communicate well with families to ensure the experience is truly personalized for the child. And lean into your partnership with your co-wish granter—knowing each other’s strengths and working as a team makes all the difference.

What story would you share to inspire others to become a volunteer with Make-A-Wish?
It’s hard to choose just one, but what continues to inspire me is the connection—with families, kids, and fellow volunteers. You witness resilience, kindness, and joy in a way that stays with you. Being a wish granter reminds you of the power of showing up, listening, and helping create something truly unforgettable.
