Liam's Disneyland Experience

Liam is 12 years old and full of joy. He spends much of his free time playing video games, learning about cars, watching movies, or hanging out with friends and family. Living in the north suburbs of Chicago with his parents, grandmother, and dog, Liam’s positive attitude and kind spirit shines daily.

When Liam was 7, Liam’s dad Gian noticed some weakness that was concerning. As a nurse himself, Gian knew something wasn’t right. Liam started stumbling, losing balance, and experiencing a loss of his coordination.

During this time, the family was living in the Philippines. Gian began researching and contacting doctors from all over the world, searching for answers. After many weeks of discomfort and uncertainty they packed their bags and moved to Chicago. A few weeks following their arrival, Liams diagnosis was confirmed, a plan was built, and Liam began treatment.

“Liam once loved to dance, swim, and play freely,” Gian shared. But suddenly, the life he once knew changed forever. Emotionally, it became difficult for him as he began asking heartbreaking questions that no child should have to ask- and slowly, he no longer seemed like himself.

Liam’s cardiologist brought up his probable Make-A-Wish eligibility. She offered to send in a referral, and when she did, it became a turning point for Liam.

For the first time since the diagnosis, Liam shared his excitement, he even started cracking jokes again. The trip served as a milestone, giving Liam and family something to look forward to, providing additional motivation to push through each day, no matter how hard it got.

Before he knew it, it was time to say goodbye to the sterile gown and hello to Lightning McQueen and sunshine. The day he had been waiting for, for so long, was finally here. With his family by his side, Liam was ready for adventure. The trip was everything they had imagined, and more. Liam was his talkative, silly, and happy self for the duration of the trip. He had a blast, constantly soaking in every moment, meeting his favorite Disney characters, and going on rides.

Gian expressed his gratitude for these moments with Liam. Though the trip may have ended, the memories are forever. “This trip changed Liam’s perspective, showing him there is more to life than sitting at home.”

“Liam is now more eager to complete his treatment,” says Gian. “After we got home, we decided to start a new family tradition: taking a trip every year so Liam can continue experiencing life beyond the hospital.”

Liam’s illness may have changed how he physically moves through life, but it will never change who he is. His joy, curiosity, and strength remain just as present as ever. And now, with fresh memories, a new sense of purpose, and another adventure already in the books, Liam and his family are moving forward more optimistic than ever.
