The Make-A-Wish America Lori-Schultz Betancourt Indomitable Spirit Award honors someone who displays an indomitable spirit through persistence, bravery, compassion, and leadership. Lori Schultz-Betancourt worked in the fundraising department at Make-A-Wish America. She passed away 20 years ago after a battle with an aggressive form of melanoma, but her strength and positive attitude left a lasting memory.
This year, a southern Ohio wish family was honored with the prestigious award. Wish kid Soraya Faruqui and her entire family embody what it means to have an indomitable spirit. Faced with the unimaginable grief that Soraya may not live as long as her two sisters, the entire family used their wish experience to transform how they live, vowing to “suck the joy out of life” and inspire and motivate others to do the same, including all of us at Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana.
By sharing their message at fundraising events and on their popular Instagram page, the Faruqui's have helped raise more than $750,000 for Make-A-Wish. We’re so proud to have them as part of our Make-A-Wish Family and can’t think of more deserving recipients of this award.
