Meet Janet DeYoung: From the Gate to the Heart of a Wish

When Janet DeYoung first learned about Make-A-Wish Arizona, she knew she wanted to get involved.

When Janet DeYoung first learned about Make-A-Wish Arizona, she knew she wanted to get involved. Having always believed in the power of kindness, she joined the organization as an airport greeter volunteer, excited to bring joy to Wish Kids and families embarking on their wish journey in the simplest way she could – by being a friendly face.

Now, the act of volunteering has become so much more than simply assisting at the airport.

I get more out of it than all of them.

Volunteer since 2024

Reflecting on the connection she’s made along the way with Wish Kids, families and her fellow volunteers, Janet says, “I get more out of it than all of them.”

This includes the airport staff she meets, who always make sure to shine the spotlight on Make-A-Wish as the Wish Kid gets ready to take off, and even the passersby who want to become part of the mission.

“One of the best parts is when you get down to the gate and they make that gate announcement, and everybody, everybody starts applauding, and they come up to the Wish Kid and talk to them, or asking how to get involved.”

As Janet spends more time volunteering, she’s come to realize the volunteer experience has had a profound impact on her outlook and believes that volunteering with Make-A-Wish has shown her the best of humanity.

When you get involved in something like this, it really shifts your perspective. You see the good in people, and it reminds you that there’s so much hope in the world.

“People are so generous and kind, and you don’t always see that," she explains. “When you get involved in something like this, it really shifts your perspective. You see the good in people, and it reminds you that there’s so much hope in the world.”

For those who are hesitant to volunteer, Janet has a simple piece of advice: “Just do it. Go for it.”

She encourages anyone thinking about volunteering to dive in with both feet.

“You will be supported every step of the way,” she says. “This organization is different. You’re not just thrown into the deep end; you’re guided and appreciated. You’re truly part of a team, and that support makes all the difference.”
