Angela's Wish to Write and Record a Song

15-year-old Angela took a fall in PE class and had a sharp pain in her left leg, thinking it was just a small injury she carried on with her very busy end-of-year activities with the school. The pain in her leg and her hip continued to worsen and she went to the ER to be seen, they examined her hip and sent her away with over-the-counter medicine and crutches. As summer began, Angela was still in a lot of pain and went back to get another MRI, this time focused on her knee and that is when they discovered she had Osteosarcoma. This was a huge shock for Angela and her mom. Angela started treatment the very next day, going through months of chemotherapy and surgeries and then many months of PT to regain strength in her legs.

During her treatment, Angela was connected to Make-A-Wish. Music has always been very important to Angela and she shared, “Music has helped me in numerous ways, but I think the most important way it has helped me is of how it acts as a way to get a heavy feeling off of my chest. To vent my frustrations and to help me remember the good things to look forward to. This was especially true during treatment as it acted as a distraction from the physical pain and suffering, I was in, it helped me get through really tough times.”

Angela decided that her wish would be to write and record an original song. Angela picked this because it was unique and something not everyone gets the opportunity to do. Make-A-Wish worked with local musicians and producers, Angela got to spend the day at a recording studio where she wrote and recorded her song titled, It’s Okay to Cry.

Angela is currently in remission and spends a lot of her time giving back to her community, she advocates for cancer patients, and since her wish Angela shared “I try my best to let people know of the lessons I learned while I had the time to process myself. I also want to continue to hopefully produce music and give back the proceeds I make to Make-A-Wish and other organizations who either uplift patients in need or develop cures and research relating to cancer.”

“My wish was magical and one of my happiest memories. It truly was a dream come true and brought me further hope for a brighter future despite my physical limitations. It felt surreal and even now I still feel like it was something that could have never happened to me. I’m so grateful for the opportunity, as I could have never done it without Make-A-Wish or Mike Posner and his team for making my wish possible.”
