Derek was born with a neurological condition that has a profound impact on his life and the lives of those around him. Due to his complex medical concerns, Derek and his family can’t always enjoy all the things life has to offer. When deciding on a wish, they wanted something that would not only have a lasting impact on their family, but also those around them.

With that in mind, earlier this year, Derek got to do one of his favorite things: stroll around the Como Zoo with his mom and his sister. Except this time, he was on his way to see his wish come to life. Derek decided for his wish, he wanted to donate money the Como Zoo and in return, he had a bench dedicated to him.

"The wish that Derek had to donate his money to Como and have a bench be placed in his honor is a wish that can keep on giving for all the years we have with Derek … not only will Derek be able to visit his bench every time we stroll through the park, but it’s a landmark that all who have gotten an opportunity to meet Derek can visit, “ explained Jessa, Derek’s mom.

On his wish day, Derek was greeted by Como Zoo staff who led him and his family on a private tour around Como Harbor with a Q&A followed by a Sparky Show where Derek was highlighted for his generous donation. The smiles of Derek, his family, and staff lit up the park as they ventured their way through.

“Having a bench at Como Zoo that we and others can visit means so much to everyone… having something Derek, family, and friends can visit even after Derek may leave us means the world,” says Jessa.

Derek’s medical journey is one that is ongoing but so is the impact he chose to have on a community that means so much to him and his family. Derek’s bench can be found on the back side of the Como Harbor Amphitheater, across from the gorillas and all are invited to visit and enjoy.
