Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Together with generous donors, supporters, staff and volunteers, Make-A-Wish delivers hope, strength, and joy to children and their families when they need it most. Since 1984, our chapter has granted more than 9,500 wishes in our Northern California territory, stretching from Monterey County to the Oregon border. 

This is an exciting time as we celebrate our chapter’s 40th Birthday and look ahead to the next 40 years of wish granting. We are beginning a strategic planning effort with goals of expanding our corporate pipeline, growing our individual major gifts, and building event revenue—to support our vision of granting the wish of every medically eligible child in our territory. 

To achieve our ambitious short- and long-term fundraising goals, Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area seeks an experienced and motivated leader to join our fundraising program. The Director of Development will provide management, leadership, and accountability for the performance and success of the Individual Giving team to meet chapter individual giving total revenue goals of $3.9M. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Development will design, implement, and manage comprehensive programs and strategies to identify, cultivate, and steward individual donors. They will work to help diversify and grow the organization’s revenue streams, by establishing a program of best practices and identifying and developing the critical processes required to increase both the number of donors and the level of support for the organization. 

This position will oversee all areas of individual giving as well as development operations. They will supervise, coach, mentor and provide strategic direction for the Individual Giving and Wish It Forward Team, including the Major Gifts Officer, Senior Development Associate and the Development and Alumni Coordinator. They will manage a personal portfolio of donors and prospects and partner with the CEO and CDO on recruiting and managing the organization’s Development Committee and its regional Advisory Councils and the Wish It Forward Council. 

This full-time, exempt position is required to work in the chapter’s Oakland office at least 2 days a week (Tuesday and Wednesday) as part of our hybrid work model. 

Responsibilities

LEADERSHIP 

  • With the CDO, train, supervise, and review the performance of the Individual Giving development staff.  
  • With input from the CDO, oversee all individual giving programs, including major gifts, annual and workplace giving, direct response, planned giving, vehicle donations, and grants. 
  • Work with the CEO and CDO to establish annual revenue goals and the strategies and metrics needed to meet or exceed these goals. 
  • Identify, oversee, and develop the marketing, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of key major donors. 
  • Lead efforts in identifying and cultivating donors to host Cultivation Events. 
  • Manage a highly tailored portfolio of 100-125 assigned individual prospective donors at various stages of cultivation cycle from identification through solicitation and stewardship. 
  • Serve as player/coach while leading the Individual Giving team towards a $2M major gifts/planned giving revenue goal. 
  • Lead planning and strategy to grow our planned giving efforts through prospecting, events, and socializing the program. 
  • Develop and manage Individual Giving, Major Gifts and Planned Giving budgets. 
  • Develop comprehensive operational plans and timelines and revenue forecasts for individual giving programs. 
  • Monitor monthly revenue and expense projections and metrics for areas of responsibility. 
  • Collaborate with the Marketing team to develop effective collateral for approaching major and planned giving donors and for supporting and telling our story at Cultivation Events.  
  • Collaborate with CEO and CDO on execution strategies and overall donor management working with Make-A-Wish America (MAWA) major gift team. Serve as primary contact for MAWA and other chapters in major gifts. 
  • Oversee the chapter’s Adopt-A-Wish program. 
  • Establish and implement a mid-level giving program. 
  • Collaborate with the Program Team to develop integrated approaches for both monetary and in-kind proposal asks for partnerships that cross-over both departments. 
  • Work closely with the Events and Corporate Teams in cultivating and soliciting individuals for participation in other fundraising activities at the chapter. 

COUNCILS & BOARD ENGAGEMENT 

  • With the CEO and CDO, support development of and activities of North Bay Regional Advisory and East Bay Regional Advisory Councils to solicit, cultivate, and steward new and existing corporate partners in support of achieving the organization’s stated corporate goals.  
  • Work closely and collaboratively with CEO, CDO and RAC’s to identify top priorities identified through our Strategic Planning process focused on fundraising, annual campaigns, cultivation event scheduling, etc.  
  • Work with the Wish It Forward Council and the Development and Alumni  
  • coordinator in engaging the members in fundraising efforts around campaigns and collaborating with Events Team on involvement with planned events, external event hosting. 

ADMINISTRATION 

  • Collaborate with CDO on stewardship for all donors. 
  • Track all activity and contacts with donors/prospects in Salesforce. 
  • Ensure the confidentiality and security of proprietary and donor information. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 
Education & Experience
  • BA/BS or equivalent combination of education and work experience  
  • 5-7 years non-profit development experience, with expertise in the major gifts sector. 5+ years staff supervisory experience. 
  • Budget management experience  
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and computer skills necessary: Desktop Publishing, Excel, and Salesforce experience preferred 
  • Demonstrated record of customer service and relationship building experience desirable. 
  • Proven ability to work on multiple projects with tight timelines and limited budgets. 
  • Must thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
