Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Together with generous donors, supporters, staff and volunteers, Make-A-Wish delivers hope, strength, and joy to children and their families when they need it most. Since 1984, our chapter has granted more than 9,500 wishes in our Northern California territory, stretching from Monterey County to the Oregon border.

This is an exciting time as we celebrate our chapter’s 40th Birthday and look ahead to the next 40 years of wish granting. We are beginning a strategic planning effort with goals of expanding our corporate pipeline, growing our individual major gifts, and building event revenue—to support our vision of granting the wish of every medically eligible child in our territory.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Corporate & Events will provide management, leadership, and accountability for the performance and success of fundraising events and corporate fundraising strategies to meet chapter revenue goals. You will supervise and coach members of the Corporate and Events Team, including the Events Associate, Events Manager, Senior Corporate Relations Manager, and Corporate Relations Manager.

As Director of Corporate & Events, you will manage and strategize to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward companies to engage them in cause marketing, sponsorships, and employee giving, and oversee our national corporate partnership program opportunities. You will be responsible for designing and implementing fundraising events, including the Evening of Wishes gala and our Walk for Wishes, and supporting all external events (third party events) with a department revenue goal of $3 million this fiscal year. You will develop and manage a strategic plan of both internal and external events that will support the organization’s goal of identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual and corporate donors to meet annual revenue goals.

This full-time, exempt position is required to work in the chapter’s Oakland office at least 2 days a week (Tuesday and Wednesday) as part of our hybrid work model.

Responsibilities

LEADERSHIP

  • Train, supervise, and review the performance of the Corporate Development and Events staff.
  • Establish annual revenue goals and the strategies and metrics needed to meet or exceed these goals.
  • Identify, oversee, and develop the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of key corporate partnerships in support of stated yearly revenue goals.
  • Manage a highly tailored portfolio of 75-100 assigned corporate and individual prospective donors at various stages of cultivation cycle, from identification through solicitation and stewardship. Serve as player/coach while leading the corporate and event teams towards a $3M revenue goal.
  • Lead efforts to seek and embrace new opportunities and partnerships to grow and expand the revenue of the corporate giving portfolio.
  • Develop and manage corporate development and events budget.
  • Develop comprehensive operational plans and timelines and revenue forecasts for corporate giving programs and events.
  • Monitor monthly revenue and expense projections and metrics for areas of responsibility.
  • Collaborate with program/mission team to develop comprehensive approach for both monetary and in-kind proposal asks, for partnerships that crossover both departments.
  • Collaborate with Marketing team to develop effective collateral for approaching corporate partners and for supporting and telling our story at our Internal and External Events.
  • Conduct research on corporate donors, prospects and to build the pipeline(s) as needed to help develop relationships.

CORPORATE GIVING MANAGEMENT

  • Oversee and guide the development of corporate grant proposals and reports to corporate partners.
  • Serve as primary contact for Make-A-Wish America’s Corporate Alliance team and other chapters.
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to set priorities for chapter engagement in all Make-A-Wish America corporate promotions/campaigns as well as cause-related marketing partners’ involvement with local chapter.
  • Collaborate with CEO & CDO on execution strategies and overall donor management for Make-A-Wish America corporate partners in support of achieving chapters’ stated revenue goals.
  • Supervise management of MAWA partnerships by the Corporate Team.
  • Review and approve all local cause-related marketing partnerships in accordance with Make-A-Wish America policies and guidelines.
  • Oversee cause-related regional marketing by providing expertise and resources to manage campaigns in those markets.
  • Maintain project files as required by local and national office standards.

EVENT SPONSORSHIP & MANAGEMENT

  • Oversee strategy, planning, implementation and fundraising to identify, recruit, retain and grow new corporate sponsors for Walk for Wishes, and our Gala, Evening of Wishes. Collaborate with development staff, CDO and CEO on securing individual gifts to events.
  • Supervise fulfillment of sponsorship benefits and stewardship.
  • Conduct an annual audit of sponsorship levels and benefits to ensure we are competitive with the local events market.
  • Oversee and manage all internal and external events. Direct and oversee event staff in planning and soliciting auction items.
  • Collaborate with Marketing on the theme, program, and marketing of events.

COUNCILS & BOARD ENGAGEMENT

  • With the CEO & CDO, support development of and activities of Real Estate Council to solicit, cultivate and steward new and existing corporate partners in support of achieving the organization’s stated corporate goals.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with CEO, CDO and RAC’s to identify top priorities.
  • Work with the Wish It Forward Council in engaging the members in fundraising efforts.
  • Oversee planning and implementation of YPAC events and the Youth Board.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Collaborate with CDO on stewardship for corporate and event donors.
  • Track all activity and contacts with donors/prospects in Salesforce.
  • Ensure the confidentiality and security of proprietary and donor information.
  • Provide positive and professional representation in the community on behalf of Make-A-Wish.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Education & Experience
  • BA/BS or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • 5-7 years non-profit development experience, with expertise in corporate and fundraising events sector. 5+ years staff supervisory experience.
  • Budget management experience
  • Knowledge of Bay Area corporate philanthropy a plus
  • Able to gather and interpret information for business research; commercially aware and customer focused
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and computer skills necessary: Desktop Publishing, Excel, and Salesforce experience preferred
  • Demonstrated record of customer service and relationship building experience desirable.
  • Proven ability to work on multiple projects with tight timelines and limited budgets.
  • Must thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
