Lily loves to play in her sensory rainbow backyard

Lily’s health and mobility have been a struggle since birth but, according to her family, she never loses her spirit and determination to enjoy life.

“Lily’s been surprising us since her first brain surgery at 30 hours old. Doctors discovered the whole middle part of her brain was missing and that her heart and lungs were not developed correctly,” said Melissa, Lily’s mother. “We’ve had countless hospital visits, she has a specialist for everything, and she will need future surgeries. We manage as best we can.”

Even facing daily health challenges, Lily is a happy child who loves looking at illustrated stories and playing outside with her toy trucks. It was that love of the outdoors that moved her parents and medical team to recommend a backyard renovation as a wish.

While Lily cannot always speak for herself, she is happiest playing outside and she loves rainbows.

Lily's backyard was not meeting her needs, but a wish transformed her backyard into a place she can play safely and have fun.

Make-A-Wish Arizona installed an adaptive laydown swing, encouraging Lily to enjoy the wind in her hair. A grassy area with a rainbow shade protects her from the sun and provides a place to play with her toy trucks. Colorful paintings add to the atmosphere which encourages Lily to explore and play.

“Every day, Lily spends time in her wish backyard. We even use her swing to incentivize practicing with her walker! said Melissa. “The backyard has renewed Lily, and she loves it!”
