Meet Shai

Shai, 4
rare disease

Shai’s parents recognized something wasn’t right. He was always thirsty, his diapers were always wet, and he was developing unexplained rashes. The answers to their questions came when Shai was two years old; he was diagnosed with diabetes insipid and langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH).

Shai’s parents, DeMyron and Hayley, discovered his diagnosis would impact the entire family. As the middle child in a family with three young boys, Shai’s brothers accompany him to all of his treatments. “We call the brothers the ‘come along buddies’ because the three of them are together for every appointment… They are super close,” says Hayley. “It’s been really sweet for Shai to have that camaraderie.”

Once Shai was referred to Make-A-Wish, DeMyron and Hayley set out to determine his true, heartfelt wish. His parents honed in on the things he talked about and really enjoyed. While at the playground, his wish became clear.

“He kept asking about the monkey bars; MONKEY BARS, MONKEY BARS, MONKEY BARS, HE LOVED MONKEY BARS. Every time we were at the playground, that’s the only thing he did… MONKEY BARS,”

shares Hayley.

It was decided, Shai’s wish would be a playscape with monkey bars and a clubhouse.

DeMyron and Hayley say the team who built the monkey bars and clubhouse “were amazing and super friendly, and they let the boys help. It was a really sweet day.” “When I see Shai on the monkey bars, it makes him look so strong. Seeing that strength in him is precious,” adds Hayley.

DeMyron notes, “There is a four-year-old little boy who is super thankful for Make-A-Wish. The whole organization has been a reminder that we are not going through this alone. We have people in our corner, and more importantly, Shai has people in his corner, supporting him through it.”

Shai’s wish is an example of how many people are touched by the inspiring power of a wish. From the doctors, nurses, and therapists, to neighbors, community members, volunteers, donors, and the clubhouse construction crew; all play a vital role in the incredible journey of a wish and bringing overwhelming joy to one incredible boy.
