During a halftime cheer routine in 2021, High School Freshman Jocelyn was rushed to the hospital. She had unrelenting pain in her chest and was having trouble breathing. That night, doctors discovered a mass in her chest and told her it was cancer. When Jocelyn learned she was eligible for a wish, she thought about a trip to Hawaii, but ultimately decided to use her wish to help others.
"I couldn't accept the trip to Hawaii, it just didn't feel right," she said. "We have been on vacation. I just can't imagine sitting on the beach knowing I could have helped somebody. I wanted to help others in my situation. I thought it would be nice for the little kids to have their favorite shows to watch on Netflix or Disney. I wanted them to have that because I know how long they wait there, and I thought that I would just feel better giving it back because I don't need it as much as other people do.”
During a big rivalry game, she presented a check to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, allowing the hospital to provide tablets and other technology to entertain children during lengthy stays for cancer treatment.
Jocelyn was named an Everyday Heroes 2023 Finalist by Columbus Monthly for her selfless wish. The program recognizes unsung people who quietly make their community a better place to live. Congratulations, Jocelyn! We're grateful for the opportunity to grant your wish and thank you for the difference you’ve made in our community.
