Beginning shortly after Thanksgiving, a local hiker will take to North Carolina’s famed Mountains to Sea Trial. His goal — to help raise $247,500 for the Make-A-Wish-Foundation in honor of his late daughter.

3-year-old Kashton didn’t waste any time getting to know his new teammates on Engine 19.The Make-A-Wish Foundation stepped in to help Kashton’s dream of battling fires become a reality. “We had a swearing-in ceremony, trained with him, checked the truck off, issued his uniform and his bunker gear,” said Captain Chris Belcher with the Winston-Salem Fire Department.

Make-A-Wish Central and Western North Carolina has announced that the Trailblaze Challenge, an endurance event where participants tackle 28.3 miles of the Foothills Trail, is set for Oct. 15-17.

Imagine being someone with little or no hiking experience and being challenged to hike 28.3 miles of the Foothills Trail in one day. That’s the challenge faced by folks who undertake the Make-A-Wish’s Trailblaze Challenge: train for 16 weeks, then, in one day, hike the westernmost 28.3 miles of the Foothills Trail.
