Mayson's Wish Provides Strength and Inspiration

Mayson and Puppy

Mayson is an 18-year-old from Denver, NC. In his free time, Mayson enjoys spending time with his friends, particularly going off-roading.

In 2019, Mayson was diagnosed with leukemia. To Mayson’s family, it seemed like their lives had come to a crashing halt. Suddenly, all their conversations were dominated by treatment schedules and blood transplants.

That was when Mayson was approached by Make-A-Wish to start thinking about his wish. Mayson thought about how much he enjoyed going off-roading with his friends. He already had a beat up 1992 Jeep Cherokee, but he wanted something that would perform on the trails. So for his wish, Mayson asked to have his Jeep Cherokee remodeled.

A car remodel is not an easy wish to grant. It takes a lot of time and the right partners who are willing to put in the work. That’s where Jon comes in. Jon is a Charlotte Mechanic and wish dad who works at The Shop in Charlotte, NC. He knows all too well the life-changing impact of a wish. After being asked by Make-A-Wish to help with the project, John worked tirelessly on Mayson’s’ Jeep for months while Mayson continued with his treatment.

After months and months of chemotherapy, Mayson’s leukemia finally went into back into remission for the 2ndtime this April. With all his appointments and the on-going pandemic restrictions, Mayson felt more limited and restricted than ever before. All he wanted to do was to get back out on the trails with his buddies. However, the promise of his wish helped Mayson push through his final treatments and gave him a reason to keep fighting.

On the day of his wish, Mayson’s family and friends surprised him with a “100 Days Post-Chemo” party. Mayson had no idea that his family was throwing him a party and was excited to celebrate with everyone by ringing a bell that his grandparents constructed for the occasion. “I know that for the second bell ring, a bunch of you couldn’t be there because of COVID. So my father and mom, they made a bell so Mayson can ring it in front of everyone.

“Thank you, I love you all.”

Little did Mayson know he was in for an even bigger surprise! Pulling around the corner was his newly renovated Jeep. Mayson got very emotional when he saw his Jeep because it was completely unrecognizable. The Jeep had been lifted and given brand new off-roading tires and special harnessed seats for Mayson’s adventures out on the trails.

Jon quickly came over to Mayson and explained all the other amazing features on his Jeep including custom lighting, new interior, a brand-new coat of paint, and special decals dedicated to Mayson and his cancer journey. Mayson couldn’t wait to get into the driver’s seat and take his “new” Jeep for a spin. With a new set of wheels and a major upgrade, Mayson ventured out on the trails just days after receiving his wish, smiling from ear to ear.

Mayson’s wish impacted not just Mayson, but his family, friends, and his entire community. Without the help of amazing supporters like Jon, wishes like Mayson’s would never have been able to become a reality. Learn how you can get involved and donate your time at https://wish.org/nc/kind.
