Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director of Business Operations, the Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of all the chapter’s marketing, communications, community and public relations efforts to advance the Make-A-Wish brand and support the organization’s vision of granting the wish of every medically-eligible child.

The Director of Marketing and Communications supervises the Marketing and Communications Specialist – together they develop the organization’s varied and integrated marketing and communications plans, products and services including; media and community outreach, special event and fundraising collateral and communications, donor stewardship recognition, mission delivery outreach and support, brand management, marketing collateral, advertising, social media, website management, etc.

Responsibilities

BRAND ADVANCEMENT

  • Be an expert in Make-A-Wish Brand Standards, and educate staff with branding presentations and updates throughout the year
  • Serve as Chapter Brand Director to protect, strengthen and elevate the Make-A-Wish brand
  • Review brand compliance of all collateral and update as needed, including ones for wish families and volunteers
  • Work with Marketing and Communications Specialist to ensure the development team is adhering to brand standards to for all materials including event signage, flyers, t-shirts, social media, press releases
  • Educate team members on the importance of brand standards and schedule trainings to ensure standards are being met
  • Situate Make-A-Wish as iconic brand within the local community
  • Create and develop communications to further advance the MAW brand

AWARENESS AND PR

  • Increase coverage by media throughout chapter region
  • Build and steward media contacts for outreach efforts and maintain relationships with key sympathetic media
  • Identify and produce impactful wish stories and press releases to share with donors and community
  • Ensure positive image through proactive approach and consistent messaging
  • Manage special event and mission publicity and marketing initiatives in order to gain public attention, support and activation through the media
  • Work with media on advertising, cause marketing and other campaigns to raise awareness and develop significant fundraising campaigns 
  • Serve as media liaison
  • Work with local partners to create mission driven segments to communicate our story and need for support
  • Keep website up to date on local media appearances
  • Respond to information queries from media and the general public
  • Manage relationship with PR firm for short-term initiatives and projects such as medical outreach to increase referrals and increase donor awareness around World Wish Day

COMMUNICATIONS

  • Manage and oversee communications calendar incorporating both National communications and Chapter communications
  • Launch and oversee year-round communication strategy for target audiences (volunteers, external events, donors, medical referral sources, corporate and individual donors)
  • Ensure brand compliance and consistent messaging in all communications for all audiences
  • Create general chapter materials including sales kits, chapter postcards, brochures, banners, acknowledgement letters, signage, etc.
  • Identify and develop additional means for touch points for various audiences
  • Create Year In Wishes annual report
  • Manage communication and marketing budget
  • Proactively manage and implement marketing strategy by achieving goals set by Development leadership including the Senior Director of Corporate/Events, Senior Director of Individual and Planned Giving, and the Senior Market Director of the Triad
  • Serve as liaison for all MarCom initiatives between the Triad office and Charlotte office
  • Stay up-to-date on National communication strategies and audience updates
  • Assist and advance communication plans designed by the National office including
    • World Wish Day
    • Story Telling Partnership
    • National Corporate Partner campaigns 
    • Personas and market segmentation

ONLINE

  • Maintain and update chapter website keeping up with current wish stories, brand standards, information, volunteer spotlight and statistics
  • Ensure timeliness of new posts on social media and maintain brand compliance
  • Manage and expand presence on social media channels including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn
  • Manage chapter email program including monthly newsletter and event promotions
  • Review monthly website analytics to monitor information flow as well as growth of social media presence and donations to chapter website
  • Work with Marketing and Communications Specialist to manage all reviews and messages via social media and connect with respective staff members as needed
  • Ensure that all collateral is driving traffic to website

MISSION DELIVERY

  • Create collateral for medical outreach, volunteers, and wishes as needed 
  • Oversee wish kid photos as they are received and ensure system is updated
  • Collaborate with Mission Delivery team to write wish stories for use by development staff
  • Work with Director of Medical Outreach and Referrals to increase awareness and bring in referrals 

PHOTO/VIDEO

  • Manage relationships with photographers and videographers to attend events and projects as needed
  • Serve as point of contact for non-event specific video projects including wish kid stories and testimonial vignettes
Requirements
  • BA or BS Degree in graphic design, public relations or marketing. Candidate must have at least 5-7 years’ experience
  • Required:  Must be proficient in HTML/CSS for email systems coding and have prior experience managing social media platforms.  S/he will be the sole employee with this expertise at the start of employment.  We will not be able to consider applicants without this experience listed on their resumes
  • Extremely creative with a passion for design and typography and the ability to communicate a message to target audiences with high visual impact
  • Proven leader with strategic thinking skills and the ability to implement big-picture strategy from the top down
  • Ability to lead with little guidance and implement process improvement procedures/policies to increase MarCom productivity within the Chapter
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented professional with excellent writing, organizational and interpersonal skills required. Ability to work independently and as part of a team a must
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks, deadlines, budgets, priorities and delegation
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), Acrobat Pro and Microsoft Office; working knowledge of video editing software a plus
  • Ability to interact with diverse groups and willingness to work occasional evening and weekend hours as required
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle
  • Computer Skills: Word, Excel, Power Point, Social Media platforms
