Volunteer Spotlight: Justine M.
What ways are you involved as a volunteer?
I am a wish granter in the Twin Cities area with a specific focus on Spanish-speaking families and children.
How did you first find Make-A-Wish?
I found Make-A-Wish online when I was looking for Minnesota volunteer opportunities that needed bilingual individuals.
How long have you been volunteering with Make-A-Wish Minnesota?
I have been volunteering for over four years, and it is amazing how time flies!
What has been the most rewarding experience of volunteering with Make-A-Wish?
The most rewarding experience is walking away from each wish knowing I made a child feel special.
What advice would you give to new volunteers?
I love getting to know Make-A-Wish staff and families. Interacting with the staff allows me to learn a lot, which helps me better serve the wish kids so I encourage everyone to ask questions from staff or other volunteers. There's so many ways to provide an amazing wish so taking the approach to learn and seek advice will only enhance your ideas. Listen, observe and stay curious!
What story would you share to inspire others to become a volunteer with Make-A-Wish?
I started at Make-A-Wish with a goal to maintain my Spanish, and I quickly realized that I was gaining so much more than an outlet for my second language. Life is crazy, and Make-A-Wish allows me to step out of myself to see that the world is a better place when you think of others. I feel better to broaden my focus onto families and children who get to be at the center of something positive. It is my best reward to know I made an impact even if it is just one family at time. I'll never forget my first wish family and how much I have grown thanks to this experience. Slow down and appreciate yourself as much as these families do!
