What ways are you involved as a volunteer?
I have been involved with the Wish Art for the Annual Wish Ball. I coordinate the Wish Kid Artists and match them with Local Artists to create a piece of art that is a key part of the Silent Auction. This process includes matching the kids’ medium areas of interests with the local artist’s specialty, as well as location proximity to allow for the most convenient meeting opportunities.

How did you first find Make-A-Wish?
I have been aware of Make-A-Wish for years and love their mission and all they do for kids to give them some normalcy during a very challenging time in their young lives. I was thrilled when Mia, a friend since junior high, was named President & CEO of the Minnesota chapter. Knowing I love to entertain and volunteer, Mia encouraged me to help with some of Make-A-Wish’s events, so I have been in the event ring for a number of years and love it. The timing finally was right as I had just stepped back from an organization and had some time to share. The Wish Art Coordinator role was a perfect fit.

How long have you been volunteering with Make-A-Wish MN?
For the past 3 years, first helping curate the art for the silent auction and the last two years I have led the Wish Art project from start to finish along with the wonderful Make-A-Wish staff.

What has been the most rewarding experience of volunteering with Make-A-Wish?
The most rewarding part of volunteering has been the excitement and creativity these kids bring to their artwork. They tell their stories through images and experiences while creating amazing works of art with feeling and personality. Seeing the pride they take in their finished work is priceless. Some are shy and some jump right in to share their experience. However, they all love the time they shared with their artist during the process and the fact that they have created an extension of themselves through art.

What advice would you give to new volunteers?
Volunteering has so many rewards. Find a cause or organization you are passionate about - when you do this, volunteering comes easily. Making others happy and helping in any way you can definitely fills the soul.

What story would you share to inspire others to become a volunteer with Make-A-Wish?
For me it is more about the experience of seeing the excitement & joy the kids have when you talk to them about their artwork, not one specific story. They love sharing their process to create the art and the fun they had working with their Artist. It is so fulfilling to know you helped bring them together to create memories they will always cherish.
