What ways are you involved as a volunteer?
This summer I was involved as a volunteer in two ways. I participated as an airport meet and greeter for families either coming back from their vacation or on their way to their destination. I also helped with the toy closet website, organized the closet and helped donate the toys that were not needed.

How did you first find Make-A-Wish?
I found Make-A-Wish because my neighbor, Teresa H., has been working for the organization for a long time and reached out to me to see if I was interested. I was looking for volunteering opportunities this summer, so it was perfect.

How long have you been volunteering with Make-A-Wish Minnesota?
I just started this summer after my first year of college. During my first year, I participated in a few volunteering events with other organizations and I wanted to continue when I came back home.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of volunteering with Make-A-Wish?
The most rewarding part of volunteering for Make-A-Wish is seeing the smiles on the children's faces because they are so excited for their trip. I love hearing their stories from their vacations and seeing their faces light up when they describe their wish. I also love helping the parents get through the airport and seeing them a little less stressed out because we are there to help. The parents are always the sweetest!

What advice would you give to new volunteers?
It is a bit of a time commitment, but it is worth it. After my first meet and greet, I knew I needed to keep doing it. It is so rewarding to see how much you help the family, and extremely eye opening to listen to the families' stories. My advice is to commit to it because these families are so appreciative.

What story would you share to inspire others to become a volunteer with Make-A-Wish?
At one of the meet and greets we had to wait a while for the car to arrive, so we talked to the family. The child was just diagnosed with leukemia, and told me he wanted to be a pediatric oncologist. It was a very bittersweet moment for me because of all the reasons this 9-year-old child would want this career. It warmed my heart to see him smile and say that, but also was heartbreaking when I saw his parents' reactions. They were the sweetest family, continuously thanked us, and hugged us goodbye. I would highly recommend volunteering for Make-A-Wish because they bring smiles to families who need them.
